Rafa Benitez Looking To Sign Pepe Reina As A Free Agent?

Rafa would love to get Pepe Reina to Newcastle for say two or three years so he can help steady the Newcastle defense.

Another reason Rafa wants Pepe is he is a winner and a leader; a big voice both on the field and in the dressing room.

Pepe is also immensely experienced at all levels, including the International level, having played 36 times for Spain.

The 35-year-old has played 740 first team club games so far in his career.

Rafa went after Pepe last summer, and Napoli tried to get the goalkeeper on a new contract, and whereas there was news he would be signing a new deal to stay in Naples, he never signed it.

And his current three-year deal he signed back in the summer of 2015 when he joined Napoli from Bayern Munich runs out this summer when he will become a free agent.

There is a report in the Sun today saying that Rafa wants £10M to bring in a goalkeeper and a striker this month.

Pepe Reina – as far as we can tell he’s a free agent this summer

This is the excerpt from the Sun report:

“Newcastle have roughly £10M to invest on a keeper and £100K/week wages to offer the right scorer.”

“But Benitez wants a little extra to secure Reina.”

Maybe Rafa wants to bring the veteran in this month and pay a nominal fee for him, but that should be reasonably small since he will become a free agent in the summer.

The alternative is to sign him on loan and then make the deal permanent in the summer, but we cannot see Napoli letting Reina leave halfway through the season.

It would be a surprise if can get Pepe Reina this month – but maybe in the summer.

Rafa will need all his powers of persuasion to get him to join Newcastle, where there’s no Champions League football for him.

What do you think?

Note: Bournemouth beat Arsenal 2-1 at home today and now go one point above Newcastle; we are now in 15th place.

18th placed Stoke play at Manchester United tomorrow afternoon.

I personally would go for Butland but that might be to the detriment of young Woodman.

Whereas Pep could help bring the young lad on as I see Woodman as the future

It is a tough run of fixtures but other teams are in the same position. 4 games where I’d like to think we can compete and get something. Burnley at home, palace away, Bournemouth away and Southampton away.

I asked yesterday why do watford and bournemouth play better football than us. is it the players or managers/coaching? Surely on paper they dont have players that are that much superior than us?

Yeah I can the Southampton match a winnable fixture even though we don’t tend to do well at their ground. Despite the result today, we can beat Bournemouth. They beat us but like yesterday’s match we could and should have been out of sight in the first half. If we are able to get a goalscoring striker, I wouldn’t have any worry about these 4 games.

10 million for a goal keeper ain,t gonna keep us in the Premier League. We need to spend all or at least any money we have on a striker whether its loan money or a purchase. Once again yesterday we should have been 2 goals ahead before they came in to it, it can be very frustrating seeing points being lost through our lack of goals. Keep th faith.

What are peoples thoughts on what srtiker we could realistically get who would score the goals we need and also come to us in our current position. I am struggling to think of a viable option

Bad result for us with Bournemouth winning. Shows you need to be positive when taking on the “top teams”, if arsenal are still in that bracket.

Damage limitation isn’t the answer, need to get points. Even if you concede 100 goals going for it, getting that 1 extra point negates all of those goals.

I can’t remember the last time goal difference decided a relegation battle.

Dave.. we should try a forward from atletico i.e. torres or gameiro as they’ve got costa back and theyre out of ch lge. apparently theyd let carrasco leave aswell.
Giovinco is a good finisher. id like giovinco as no10.
Id also look at leicester as they’ve got too many forwards so musa or ulloa if ihanechao not available.
But its all loan as we have no money but honestly i hope rafa kisses and makes up with mitro. Mitro should be fired up for upcoming world cup

A lot of people say …why would pcp/Amanda want to buy us now as we could get relegated

    Erm yeah

But we might not either , I would say it’s 50/50

I would also say if we got an announcement end January / early February that would give everyone a lift and I believe we would stay up

Biut what if we do go down and pcp/ Amanda have taken over the club will only be worth £125/150 Million

Erm yes but there is a chance of us getting promoted ?

In fact I would say a great chance up finishing in the top 6 at least

With the squad we have and 2 additions we could come back up ??

Then the club is back up to 300 Million ?

    Surely that’s all plausible ??

Our 1st or all investment needs to be a centre forward before we even think about goalkeepers or whatever.

    With pcp/Amanda in charge

A club that has a good manager

All the fans back on board

    Sell outs every week

    1 or 2 additions

I would think promotion back up to the premier league would be achievable

    RUNAWAY777,

A previous posting gave a very plausible explaination that players can’t be bought or sold during a takeover as they represent a major part of the valuation of the club and any changes would be reflected in the sale price and no doubt extend or halt the whole takeover process. Therefore, it appears nothing much Rafa can do about it.

He has his grumbles about his budget but doesn’t look like a man at his wits end.

What we don’t know is whether his budget grumbles are more to do with PCP Capital Partners not giving him a heads up on what he can spend.

None of these are long term answers but to get us through this season

    Batshuyi
Remy (gamble but done it here before)
    Deeney
Sturbridge (big gamble with injury record)
Niasse (did ok for Hull last year)

Non excite me but desperate times.

We play every team in the league twice so our fixtures can not be any harder or easier, although our form and that of others differs through the season.

As we have to play the top six teams still there is every chance that we could get a loan from one of them, in an effort to improve their chances of qualifying for the CL.

Even if we get relegated why cant PCP understand we can buy our way out of championship. Also parachute payment would pay them back most of the over payment they make now. also they can pay in installments so i cant get head round why they just dont pay the 350 mill and get it over and done with

I don’t think there’s anything stopping the club making signing officially, just like you say, it complicates the negotiations.

If Ashley does spend say 50 million and ties the club into contracts paying £X in wages, then the sale were to fall through he’d have to fit find the money from the club or himself.

I can’t imagine any prospective buyers would guarantee the paying of fees and wages before adeal was complete and ratified by the PL.

    ‘…With pcp/Amanda in charge..’

Why do you think they will be in charge ?

Buying and running a football club (or any sports club) from past experience doesn’t appear to be what they do. PCP Capital Partners are finance brokers.

Their involvement in the Man City purchase resulted in the real owners taking over and appointing their own team to run it.

Loan options from top seven clubs, players that would prefer more matches and possibly excess to current club:

    Man C – Foden (injured?)
    Man U – Martial / Rashford
    * particulalry if Sanchez moves to either
    Chelsea – Batshuayi
    Liverpool – Ings / Sturridge
    Tottenham – ???
    Arsenal – Walcott / Giroud
