Rafa Benitez started a team on Saturday with players that were with us last season and formed the core of the team that got promoted last May.
But we were not able to beat bottom of the table Swansea City and could only get the 1-1 draw.
And now in the last two games, we have failed to beat Swansea and Brighton, and that must be looked at as 4 points lost.
Newcastle need every point we can get this season if we are to avoid the drop for the second time in two years.
Newcastle have to somehow start to win games against the bottom 14 teams in the league if we are to survive this season – if not we will be a Championship club again in May.
That would be almost impossible to take for Newcastle fans – the club will have let their fans down – again.
Rafa Benitez – on the touchline on Saturday
Rafa Benitez is working hard to bring in some new talent this month but we are already halfway through the transfer window, and it doesn’t look like we are close to bringing any new players in.
The absurd situation is that Rafa has not been told what his transfer budget is.
What a way to run a club.
This is what Rafa Benitez said after the disappointing 1-1 draw with the Swans:
“That starting line-up tells everybody where we are.” “I have been saying it all season.”
“Some people say, ‘Ah, but you have to do this, you have to do that’, but that is the reality.”
“We are in the Premier League, and we have a lot of players giving everything.”
“But sometimes it is not enough. The amazing thing and the positive thing is that they are working so hard.”
“The good thing and the bad thing is that you have a lot of teams very close, separated only by a few points.”
“It’s good because everybody is there, and so you can still fight. But it’s bad because if you make a couple of mistakes, a lot of teams will go ahead of you.”
“The reality is that we have to do a lot of things right if we want to win games.”
We’ll just have to hope that Rafa can get some good players in, but as the window goes on the possibility increases that we will not bring in any new players for the second January running.
That would be criminal.
