Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo is reporting today the Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez does not intend to sign his former goalkeeper Pepe Reina from Napoli this month.
Rafa is trying desperately to bring in four players during this transfer window with one of the players being a goalkeeper, and he has yet to have his first success although we seem close in bringing in Crystal Palace left-back Pape Souare.
Rafa was after Reina in the summer but failed to bring the goalkeeper into Newcastle.
Rafa wants more experience in the team and thought that Reina would be the perfect player last summer – but it didn’t happen,
Benitez also wanted to sign free agent goalkeeper Willy Caballero from Manchester City and West Ham goalkeeper Adrian but was not successful in getting either.
Pepe Reina – Rafa not interested in him this month
In Mundo Deportivo’s article, Benitez is quoted as stating that he has a “strong bond” with Reina but that he has “no intention” of signing the goalkeeper this month.
Here is an extract from the Mundo Deportivo report which says Rafa has a magnificent relationship with the Napoli goalkeeper:
“Rumors said Rafa Benitez wanted to work the miracle and sign Pepe Reina for Newcastle United.”
“However, there was talk that the deal, non-existent in the end, seemed impossible since Reina is a key piece for coach Maurizio Sarrithe – at least for the remainder of the season.”
The latest we have on getting a goalkeeper in is we have enquired about Sparta Prague goalkeeper Martin Dubravka and Newcastle want to take him on loan this month.
But Sparta Prague want assurances from Newcastle they will sign him full time this summer, whereas Newcastle only want an option to buy Dubravka this summer, dependent on him doing well on loan.
Obviously, if Newcastle do sign Dubravka any chance of signing Pepe Reina at Newcastle would be gone.
