Amanda Staveley and PCP Capital Partners have hit back at Mike Ashley’s claims the recent negotiations to buy the club that he called off yesterday have been a complete waste of time.
They say they did bid around £250M in November for the club and they were keen going into the new year to buy Newcastle United.
Ashley has suggested there was never any real deal on the table after four months of negotiations and it seems that Ashley lost his patience with the phony reporting that seems to have been going on.
We can only assume the new bid reported yesterday in the Express and Star were put out by Staveley’s people (Richard Desmond) and was not accurate reporting and Ashley got sick of all the leaks.
Ms. Amanda Staveley – said to be devastated talks called off
This was the statement put out last night by Sky Sports from a source close to Ashley:
“It is only right to let the fans know that there is no deal on the table – or even under discussion – with Amanda Staveley and PCP.”
“Attempts to reach a deal with Amanda Staveley and PCP have proved exhausting, frustrating and a complete waste of time.”
The Chronicle is reporting today that Amanda Staveley is “devastated” about Ashley breaking off negotiations with her group.
And it was done through the media as Amanda learned the news like the rest of us – via the media – and the statement put out by Sky Sports on behalf of Ashley.
George Caulkin of the Times has reported the following today:
“Two sources close to Amanda Staveley assert categorically that PCP submitted a written bid for NUFC in mid November.”
“Submitted to Ashley’s solicitors through Chris Mort of Freshfields (the former Newcastle United Chairman 2007-2008), they insist.”
“For their part, Newcastle sources insist that the statement released to Sky – that talks with Staveley have been “a complete waste of time” – are reflective of Mike Ashley’s views.”
We’ll have to wait to hear what Rafa Benitez’ reaction is to all of this – but it cannot be good.
Newcastle fans are angry at Ashley for what has happened and it must be very difficult to negotiate with this man.
There will possibly be more fall out today and we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
The club is still up for sale – but the collapse of the talks with Amanda Staveley is not good news.
