Italian website Calcio Mercato are reporting today that Newcastle have had a bid of around €10m (£8.8M) rejected for 20-year-old right back Pol Lirola.
Lirola is from Juventus but is on loan at Sassuolo, and it seems this is a more long-term buy that Rafa Benitez wants.
Juventus signed the player in the summer of 2016 after he had been on loan from Espanyol.
He is in the second season of a two-year loan deal at Sassuolo.
It’s the second bid Newcastle are reported to have made for a permanent signing with a £16M bid for Galatasaray central midfielder Badou Ndiaye also being turned down.
Pol Lirola – Juventus right back – on loan at Sassuolo
So there’s £25M Newcastle seem willing to spend on permanent transfers this month – but time is of the essence.
It seems that there will be no deal with Lirola not staying at Sassuolo for the rest of this season.
Maybe Newcastle will make Lirola a target this summer?
But this activity in the transfer market – although belated – shows that Mike Ashley has realized Rafa must have reinforcements if Newcastle are to remain in the Premier League this season.
Relegation would mean the price of Newcastle would drop by up to £200M in the open market.
Lirola has one Spanish cap at U21 level.
Lirola was born in Barcelona, and in December 2016, he made his debut for the Catalonia national team, starting in a 3–3 draw against Tunisia.

Excuse my grammar, I meant that I doubt if the rumours are true and hope it’s just newspaper tripe.

Comment #5If Ashley does decide he’s found some money to back Rafa and that money’s used for say £50m of transfer fees, then it could give PCP a way in to increase its offer £300m without a relegation clause or £350m with.
Could this be a nice face-saver for all parties to help a speedy completion to the takeover?.
Just a thought

Comment #8Why arent we talking to liverpool about sturridge on loan? He will be trying to impress Southgate to get in the WC squad so should be motivated. Its a no brainer

Comment #10A defender? Another fullback? What are we doing!?!?
Put any money we got into a goal scorer. I dont care if we drop the lot all on one player. I doubt we’ll have much and if we can use what we got to score more goals that will be much more important than “one for the future”

Aarons/Atsu——Perez——-Murphy
Shelvey———–Diame——-Merino
Dummett—-Clarke—-Lascelles—Mbemba
———————-Darlow
Not sure if Mbemba is available, we need a solid back line and Yedlin maybe too attack minded but with the only other alternative being Hayden then the Yank will have to do.

Comment #20Are all the attention seekers that strung many of you along and had you hanging on their every word still frequenting the blog in the midst of the takeover news? They were adamant it was done and they had the inside track.

Comment #22DOES anyone else not think it strange that Rafas deadline 20th jan was very precise, both parties coming out with statements only days before the date.
im guessing that rafas statement was aimed at both parties.

face palm,, wow
Owen was a great goal scorer when fit, didnt play much though.
so a player not scoring on the pitch is the same as a player not scoring on the treatment table, so why waste MORE money

Comment #32It’s obvious Ashley isn’t keen on any causes and given our current situation PCP aren’t in any mood to match the outright asking price without caveats attached. So I see nothing happening until we know what league we’re playing in next season now.

I think if we stay up and have that TV money in the bank. He’ll take the club off the market to be honest and if we get relegated pcp won’t be interested.
Best to forget about the white knight Amanda and her chums I think.
