Rafa Benitez had hoped to have all his players in by today, January 20th but he has been able to get not one player through the door, and it’s not for want of trying.
That’s the bad news, but the good news is that we found out yesterday that Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley are both working on trying to get the players Rafa wants through the door before the end of the month.
Rafa seems hopeful some players can even be signed in the next few days.
Rafa Benitez – now upbeat about possible transfers
This is some of what Rafa said yesterday as reported in the Chronicle and Rafa even seems optimistic:
“We will see now during the window but the message was positive.”
“It was really positive the message so we will see where we are at the end of the window.”
“Yes. The targets are there, the prices are there. The board know the prices so we will see.”
“We are working on it. I don’t know if anything is closer, but we have the green light to bring players in.”
“That is positive that there will be some money spent this month.”
“It will be a red light when we get to the end of the transfer window, but it is a green light now.”
“We have to believe we can do what we need to do right up until January 31.”
You can never accuse Rafa of not doing his job to the full, and it seems the players he wants are unchanged from what he presented to the Newcastle hierarchy in late December.
But the good news is that Mike Ashley may now be involved in trying to get the players in.
He must realize if we are relegated he’s likely to lose around £150M or more in the price he can get for Newcastle United.
At least he seems to have woken up.
And Rafa has also said he doesn’t need to know how much money is available because the club will try to get his targets in either on loan or permanently if that is needed to get the player.
