The last time we had Mike Ashley actively involved in trying to bring new players into the club was in January 2013, and he was able to bring in four players.
That was the week following Saturday 19th January – that’s when we surprisingly lost 2-1 at home to Reading – the first time ever we had been defeated by Reading.
That ended a run of five games in which we picked up just one point.
In total, Newcastle brought in five French players that window – Debuchy, Yanga-Mbiwa, Haidara, Gouffran, and Sissoko.
Sandro Ramires – while at Barcelona
And there has been good news today (yes – that’s not a typo) that we could get Kenedy on loan from Chelsea if the Blues are successful in bringing in Roma left-back Emerson Palmieri this month.
And the Chronicle (Lee Ryder) is reporting that Newcastle are after a mystery striker and the selling club expect Newcastle to go above our current transfer fee record of £16M if we can sign him permanently.
Our guess would be it’s our former target of 2011 – 30-year-old Kevin Gameiro – now at Atletico Madrid.
If we can get Kenedy in there is still one additional loan we can make from an English club, but any number of them from clubs outside England.
Maybe that loan deal with a Premier League club could be 22-year-old Spanish U21 striker Sandro Ramirez – the Everton player who Rafa was interested in signing last summer and he is now available on loan.
If we can get a top striker in permanently and Sandro Ramirez to the club on loan, that would plug the gaping hole in class, we have at the moment at the striker position.
If Ramirez does come on loan, we expect Rafa to ask for an option to buy in his loan contract.
The young striker cost Everton £5.3M from Malaga, and he came through the Youth Academy at Barcelona.
Sandro has played for all the Spanish Youth sides and appeared 32 times for Barcelona with 7 goals.
