The Express are reporting the potential deal of Newcastle allowing Jonjo Shelvey to move to West Ham is edging closer and that the deal could still happen this month.
But Rafa would need to be able to bring in another central midfielder if he was to let Shelvey leave the club.
Rafa is frustrated at Shelvey’s lack of discipline on the pitch and he and striker Aleksandar Mitrovic will probably both be sold this summer.
Shelvey splits opinion on Tyneside, but there’s no doubt he has talent but he also has temperament issues.
But why would we sell one of our best players to a relegation rival this month?
Jonjo Shelvey – splits opinion on Tyneside
Maybe we can use the deal to get West Ham striker Diafra Sakho coming the other way on loan?
That’s could be a leverage Newcastle could use, but again we would need to bring in another central midfielder before Shelvey would be allowed to leave.
Rennes have reportedly had two bids turned down in the last couple of days for Sakho and the news is the Senegal International would like to return to play in France.
And we don’t know if Rafa rates Sakho or if he would be an improvement on what we already have.
Shelvey is an experienced Premier League player and it would still be a shock if we sold him this month to West Ham.
We’d much rather have him available to help Newcastle survive in the Premier League this season.
