Haidara, Mbemba, And Saivet Start At Stamford Bridge For Newcastle

Rafa Benitez has just named his side for this afternoon’s 4th round FA Cup tie at Chelsea.

Rafa has made a few surprise selections with Sadio Haidara, Chancel Mbemba and Henri Saivet starting this game.

We expect the formation will be something like 5-4-1.

The rest of the team is not too surprising with Dwight Gayle in the lineup.

It looks like subs Yedlin, Dummett, Diame, Atsu, Murphy, and Joselu will start the game at home to Burnley on Wednesday night.

Henri Saivet – starts the game today

Here’s what Rafa has said about the game today:

“I think we have to find the balance. I always say we can progress in any competition, in this case in the FA Cup, if we have the squad strong enough to compete.”

“We will see if we can do it, but I will use the squad, for sure.”

“Every game is important, but obviously, we know how massive it is to stay in the Premier League, because of all the money around and then you can improve your team if you have more money.”

“We will use some players that were maybe not playing, and obviously some that were. I need to find this balance between players with match fitness and players who are not playing too much.”

“I am sure they (Chelsea) will consider this the most important competition for them right now.”

“The league is very difficult for them, they are out of the Carabao Cup, so I think it is a priority for them.”

“I think it will be a very strong side in front of us.”

As Rafa hints at, the FA Cup is not a priority for Newcastle this season, the league is, but it’s always good to win games.

About one-quarter of our fans think we can win this game today – let’s hope they are right.

Well if we beat chelsea with that team we deserve to win the cup
Surely no need to weaken it that much?

    Or 5-3-1-1 when defending

3-5-2 when attaching (Ritchie number 10 off Gayle)

Jail, don’t take this the wrong way (I know u will), but what’s the difference between rafa sending out a week team in the cup and pardew doing the same? I don’t have an issue with the team, because the league is everything but surely the same thing is being played out? I like saivet and would prefer if he played his way into being a reliable squad member.

6/11 for me and it’s no surprise that there are surprise’s.

Any one get near to his pick.

Chelsea putting out a full strength lineout, so Conte definitely wants the FA cup this year.

all the signs suggest a 3cb wingback lineup now and potentially in future. kenedy and yedlin look perfect for it.
but niether are playing. will be interesting to see if it is a block of 3 in midfield and also where ritchie fits into this. its a interesting lineup and will be more interesting to see where/how it fits together on the field. Chance to shine in the shop window for some.

“Not going to bother watching?” I can’t believe I’m reading that??
I personally think it’s what was expected and there’s enough in there to cause them problems but can’t see us getting much from the game other than avoiding a “good slap”. Glad Haidara starts, as I could never understand why we needed a left back? Priority was a striker and number 10 but not holding my breath on either.

I dont see the ball “sticking” up top. so I guess the hope is it’ll be launched over the defence when chelsea play a high line. Expect lots of gayle running after the hollywood passes.

not gonna get anything from headers up top either. so it’ll be low crosses from the wings.. and probably long distance shots from ritchie with gayle following in.

Jørgensen missed the last match due to suspension. 2 yellows so was only a 1 game ban. Back today and starting up top.

Feyenoord digging in for an increased bid and Ashley’s not budging.

We need a striker and avoid the drop ) is the man mad?

I dont know but this could actually get us the win, like most of us conte would have watched and analyzed the toons past couple of matches, formation, weaknesses and players roles etc. Where and what to exploit. This selection will have him surprised and needing to rethink his gameplan… very little time to prepare.

Fairly predictable selection with Haidara, Mbemba & Saivet no longer in Rafa’s long term plans. Atsu,Shelvey & Gayle could also go if the right offer comes before Wednesday.Mitro again not on the bench & not likely to be on Wednesday either in case a late increased bid comes in for him.
Likely to be at least 7 changes for Burnley game

Is mitro actually injured or just acting injured so not to be sold? Who buys a crocked player and mitro has said before he loves the toon and idolises shearer. He may feel rafa will walk and the next manager will utilise him.

It doesn’t matter what team we put out we’ll still be out classed by Chelsea, the difference between our squads are massive. Hope we’re lucky today, shocks are possible.
This season is all about survival so the league in this instance is a priority.

if you are going to play 5 at the back at least play some our creative midfielders and most potent strikers
How do you play 5 at the back and Hayden in midfield
Ritchie – who has failed to go past any defenders or score a single goal all season- being played upfront just takes the cake
Might as well play 11 defenders
