It looks like Aleksandar Mitrovic will be staying at Newcastle after all, with no bids of around £15M coming in for him and Newcastle leaving it very late to sign a new striker.
In fact, we haven’t sold anybody so far with other players like Jack Colback, Sadio Haidara, and Henri
Saivet also for sale this month.
Mitrovic was all ready to leave the club this month, so he can play regularly and increase his chances of getting into the Serbian squad for the World Cup in Russia this summer.
Aleksandar Mitrovic – still at Newcastle
But that’s almost a certainty given the crucial goals he scored for his country in qualification.
Rafa was asked recently if the striker had played his last game for the club:
“If he stays here, he can play. If he doesn’t stay, he will not play. But, at the moment, he’s our player.”
“I have no idea at the moment if we can bring in a new goalkeeper.”
“We’re trying to do business. Still, we’ll see, as we have time. Hopefully, we can do something.”
Newcastle are not heavily linked to any striker at the moment other than Nigerian International Kelechi Iheanacho of Leicester City on loan – but that has to be a long shot at this point.
We may sign 29-year-old Sparta Prague goalkeeper Martin Dubravka on loan with an option to buy him in the summer.
But we need a striker brought in, and there’s much time left.
It will be the ultimate in incompetence if Newcastle fail to sign a new striker before the transfer window closes late tomorrow night.
