The Mail are reporting today that Newcastle and Rafa Benitez are furious after they thought they had a loan deal all tied up for Daniel Sturridge yesterday.
We had agreed terms with Liverpool and Sturridge was due to arrive in Newcastle yesterday at about noon but didn’t show.
And it turns out a late move by West Brom had changed the mind of the Birmingham-born striker.
The deal was for £1.5M to get him on loan, and we would pay all of his £130K/week wages.
The deal was agreed following a conversation between Benitez and Sturridge about the move.
Rafa Benitez – furious over late change of mind by Sturridge
Usually, when Benitez talks to a player that’s it, and they are only too keen to work under his excellent coaching and man-man management.
But that was not the case yesterday and it could be crucial to Newcastle if we cannot get another striker in before tomorrow night.
But Newcastle cannot look for excuses now because we have brought this on ourselves.
It’s all our doing.
Mike Ashley wasn’t interested in signing anybody until halfway through this transfer window, and Newcastle are not known for doing any quick deals in the transfer market and we will not pay out the going rate for players.
This is almost a ruse to excuse Newcastle for our blushes for what happened yesterday.
We do sympathize with manager Benitez, who has football novices above him in the Newcastle hierarchy.
We have left it all too late to do good business in this crucial transfer window, and we are now paying the price for that lack of foresight.
That’s what the truth is.
