This is going to be a really busy and hopefully very successful day for Newcastle in the last nine hours of the January transfer window.
We have Leicester City striker Islam Slimani and Sparta Prague goalkeeper Martin Dubravka coming in on loan; Slimani has arrived for his medical and the Slovakian International goalkeeper is jetting in to have his.
Sky Sports are reporting the arrival of Dubravka will allow Newcastle’s excellent young goalkeeper Freddie Woodman to go out on loan.
Martin Dubravka – on his way to Newcastle for medical – loan deal initially
Keith Downie is reporting that Mitrovic, Aarons, and Saivet will also go out on loan.
So Slimani & Dubravka IN this afternoon for Newcastle; Mitrovic, Aarons, Saivet & Woodman out (ALL loan deals). ?????
— Keith Downie (@SkySports_Keith) January 31, 2018
Henri Saivet will move to Turkish SuperLig side Sivasspor and Mitrovic will rejoin his former club Anderlecht and get some playing time before the World Cup in Russia this summer.
Sky Sports are also reporting that Aarons has rejected a loan move to Hull City in the Championship in favor of moving to Serie A side Hellas Verona who are managed by former Newcastle coach Fabio Pecchia.
Woodman seemed to have been all set to move to Aberdeen but Celtic have made a late move to also sign the top young goalkeeper on loan.
Comments welcome.

Comment #4I’d love just more. Either Torres, Ben Arfa, Llorente from Real or that young Brazilian lad we were linked with a few days ago. Preferably one of the latter 2 as they are younger and hopefully hungrier – that would make it a good window instead of an OK one. Not holding my breath mind!

Comment #9After all the doom & gloom of yesterday Ashley will feel he has brought us what we want a striker & a goalkeeper but what he has actually done is hopefully marginally strengthened the team at the express of slightly weakening the squad. At the moment Mitro, Soviet,Aarons & Woodman out an Kennedy , Slimani & Dubravka in. He has reduced the overall wage bill & spent nothing on increasing his assets albeit the actual sale value of Slimani & Kennedy far outstrip those sold.
I’s a real shame the three stooges have little or no knowledge of football as Dubravka could have been bought for £4M early in the window. This could have set off a much better chain of events. Darlow could have been sold for at least £10 M (future England prospect) , Mitrovitch could have been sold to Brighton for £10m making £20M to spend on Jorgensen. Books balanced & wage bill slashed. Then swap Cairney for Gayle – no cash changes hands & wage bill similar. Kennedy & Slimani deals still take place. We get our left back cover , we get a schemer in midfield & we still have three strikers but of much better quality. Keep Woodman as 3rd choice keeper if Elliott injured. If Mitro not good enough for us then why worry he will be good for Brighton,Don’t get it. WE would then have room for two more foreign loan deals. Torres,Ben Arfa or whoever

Comment #11Here’s my team for tonight 4-3-2-1
Darlow
Yedlin Lascelles Mbemba Dummett
Ritchie Shelvey Diame
Murphy Kenedy
Gayle
Now that’s a side with pace and maximizes what we have in spades, pacey wingers and defenders, with Shelvey’s passing and Diame’s holdup play. Hopefully this offsets our lack of natural No. 9. One thing for sure it will not be a boring side to watch!
In case you are wondering Kenedy used to play winger and imo he was played out of position at LB. In any case we need goals tonight and Dummett can do a job at LB. Take Burnley on and start Kenedy tonight Rafa! He’s from Chelsea’s bench for crying out loud which means he should walk into our line up ahead!

It would be great to see Torres sign on loan or/and Coleback to be moved on.

Comment #13Springy that’s the problem we have him for probably 10 games maximum cos he’ll miss Burnley, Palace & probably United & won’t be allowed to play against Leicester. We really need another striker but not at all hopeful . I think we are done for this window. Have to hope it’s enough & the players here can step up to the plate with help of our fanatical support urging them on.

Gayle over Joselu because with confidence Gayle can score and we sqaw that last year. Joselu has had a run of games and didn’t show anything.

Comment #22Westlancs “that’s the problem we have him for probably 10 games maximum”
At least Brighton has the same problem with their new striker from PSV Einghoven. Hopefully Slimani heals up right quick. The bright light in that is the Seagulls have a run of 4 winnable games right now, if their new striker can’t make it in for at least 3 of them he may not be able to play a role in keeping them up. Bad news is we also have 3 competitive fixtures early.

Comment #23The maths on Slimani would appear to be buy for £20m at the end of the season less the £2m loan fee and there’s your £18m record transfer.
Jorgensen must be well pissed with Feyenoord.

Completely agree. That is all that matters even if Dubravka only rides the bench. Woodman is one for the future but only if he gets games now.

Slimani does have a slight thigh injury at the moment but this is thought to be nothing more than a light knock and the striker was never going to be available to play against Burnley because the move missed yesterday’s noon deadline for players to be registered in time to play in the latest round of fixtures.

Thigh is better than ACL etc. but for a striker it can absoluetly sideline them with all the aerial contests (isn’t that wad did Big Andy). At 29 Slimani isn’t a spring chicken either and it could take longer to heal. Hopefully it’s a little strain that just needs a rest. We need him!

Comment #35Hibbit Thanks for clearing that point up for Dal. Knowing NUFC we’ll rush him back too soon and then he cold be out for the rest of the reason. That would be a great piece of business for Leicester.Tha’s why if we let Mitro go we need another fit striker. Remember Gayle and/or Jokulu will be severely tested tonight against the strongest defence in the Premiership.

Comment #36Slimani get’s injured and we are back to square one with only Gayle and Joselu as cover. Will he make a difference, well when playing with talented players Mahrez, Gray, Okazaki and Vardy he hasn’t set the world on fire so that remains to be seen.
As for Dubravka, he’s unproven in the EPL and his signing will be detrimental to the progress and development of Elliot and Darlow who are better than a number of keepers in the EPL. It’s bad management and a bad footballing decision, particularly when we are screaming for another forward and an experienced creative box to box midfield player or even an established holding midfielder which is what we are lacking.
Also what has happened to the record transfer fee allegedly available?
More smoke and mirrors, we tried but couldn’t get the players over the line. The blind leading the blind and not a clue between them.
All of the teams around us have strengthened their squads and invested significantly in new signings and quality loan players.
Rafa’s directive was simple, at least 3-4 quality players by 20th January, yet we end up in the same situation again.
If there are no more signings before the window closes Rafa should resign. That way he can walk away with dignity. If he stays and we stay in the relegation zone, he’s going to lose the fans and his dignity because quite simply, he wasn’t strong enough to stand up to the board and deliver an ultimatum that could have kept us up.
I hope I’m wrong but we’ve seen it all before. Given the strengthening and investment of the clubs around us, their form and ability to pick up odd points, our lack of investment and having arguably the hardest end of season fixtures we’re in for a relegation battle.
If the club can’t see it coming and can’t back their manager we deserve everything we get.

Comment #37Well would you believe it fatty telling the truth. He said in his sky interview he would not put another penny in and he hasn’t . Loans are not the añswer every teams cast offs. We are to little to late I hope I am wrong. I even thought loans because he is selling up. But history shows he’s not bothered one jot. On my way to match if we struggle early could be a toxic atmosphere
