Benitez wanted Kenedy ion last summer and his display last night showed that if he had been successful in August in getting him in on loan we could be better off in the league.
While lacking match fitness Kenedy is likely to start every game for Newcastle and his skill last night was there for all to see.
He set up Lascelles’ great headed goal and got us the penalty in the first half that Joselu failed to convert.
Maybe Matt Ritchie will start more games now?
Kenedy – excellent debut by the 21-year-old
That miss and another Joselu miss in the second half cost us 2 vital points last night – but we still have all to play for.
Again we lost the game with a late goal from Sam Vokes.
His initial header was saved by goalkeeper Karl Darlow but the ball hit him on its way down from the crossbar and went in.
No luck there for Newcastle and Karl.
This is what Rafa Benitez said bout Kenedy and the game last night:
“We needed two or three things to give the team confidence when we have the ball.”
“Kenedy has to improve his match fitness, but in terms of the quality he has – good deliveries and good passes – he’s giving us something, and hopefully he will give us more.”
“It’s a pity, because don’t have too many penalties,”
“When we had to decide, it’s normally Ritchie. Ritchie was not there, and Joselu was second.”
“He has not practiced too much, because we didn’t have penalties all season. “It wasn’t a good penalty, but we have to carry on.”
“I think we have seen some games where we deserved to win and we couldn’t do it,”
“The reality is that we’re creating enough chances to win games, but we’re not defending in the way we have to defend if we want to be sure we can win games at home.”
“It’s a pity. It’s a lack of experience at times. We’re in the second part of the league, so we have to learn quicker.”
“And don’t make these mistakes in defense and take our chances when we have chances. “We had enough chances to win the game.”
We went up one place in the league to 14th and a few wins can see us quickly climb that league table.
We overtook Huddersfield who have one point from the last four games and we are now ahead of both Brighton and Huddersfield – the two clubs promoted with us.
Kenedy looks like he will be our Man of the Match for last night, but Mo Diame played extremely well and is now looking like the player we thought we had signed in the summer of 2016.
Let’s hope Mo can keep up his good form – and Kenedy can get even better.
