Shearer Thinks Ashley Is Driving Rafa Out – And Takeover Will Not Happen

In his article in the Sun today Newcastle icon Alan Sharer has gone through how Ashley has treated Rafa Benitez this season, and he thinks Rafa will leave the club this summer, as we reported earlier today.

Alan has recounted how Mike Ashley gave Rafa very little money to spend in the summer – £19M net to be exact – by our reckoning.

And then again in January Rafa could only make loan moves – three players coming in – after Ashley did nothing for the first half of January.

Mike Ashley – staying as Newcastle owner?

We’re not sure how a manager as renowned as Rafa Benitez puts up with the treatment he’s had from the owner, with Ashley making promises to keep Rafa – and then reneging on them.

It’s little wonder with so little money to spend compared with the other promoted clubs like Huddersfield and Brighton and the other (already rich) PL clubs – that we are now struggling in 5th bottom place in the league.

This is some of what Alan has written in his Sun Column today:

“Staying in the Prem alone is probably worth around £110M a season. Benitez got the club back up but was not backed to make the next big stride.”

“He was clearly struggling with a lack of quality in the squad ahead of the January transfer window so what happened?”

“He saw Brighton and Swansea both break their transfer records and Palace spend £9m on a striker.”

“Benitez, meanwhile, had to scramble around getting players in on loan.”

“The hope generated by news of a possible takeover has disappeared. It is not going to happen.

“Ashley is holding out for more than is being offered up front and is gambling on a bumper new TV pay deal increasing the value of the club.

“Meanwhile, Benitez works with what he has got — a team lacking in quality but not heart.

This is now the fourth season out of the last five Premier League seasons Newcastle have been in a dogfight to stay in the Premier League and avoid relegation.

And people wonder why some of  Newcastle fans’ nerves are almost completely shot!

If Ashley stays, it will be the nightmare scenario for Newcastle fans.

Link was posted last night and I am just listening to the journalists saying exactly what a lot on here say, week in week out.

Appologies for misleading folk yesterday with the fist pumping linesman clip I posted. It was actually the liverpool match that was from. In my angry haze I didn’t realise until just after I’d posted it. That linesman said to the ref that if the liverpool player had not touched the ball then it was offside. The ref said he didn’t know if he had, and then “I’m giving a penalty”. At this point the linesman does his fist pump/thumbs up getsture, which suggests he was happy that a penalty was given (a liverpool supporter). Though to his credit he was honest in his appraisal of the situation in respect to his understanding of the rules.
Something interesting I read yesterday, was that linesmen are selected locally. Not sure if this is true, but is a stupid idea in terms of fairness, if true. They are likely to either love or hate the home team.
Was the linesman that gave the pen against us the same one that gave the not offside and ignored Lascelles being held/blocked for our first half free kick? Does this mean holding a shirt is an offence, but holding the whole man is not?
Seems I’m still not a happy bunny about it a day later.

I think Shearer’s assuming that Ashley won’t have finalised the club’s sale by the start of this summer and that his greed and spite’ll mean that if we stay up, he won’t deal with PCP – unless they come in with £350m with no strings attached. But even then, if they did, the greedy git’s want more!

Ashley’s supposedly trying to tie Rafa down to a new contract? Shearer warned him about Ashley and sure as hell, Ashley’s been shown yet again to be a liar whose aim is to run the club on the bones of it’s arris.

So on that basis, the uncertainty would tempt Rafa to walk if he received an offer big enough to cover any, if any, severance payment. Who might be interested? We’ll, it seems that West Ham’s owners are getting some stick from it’s fans who are peed off with the owners’ lack of ambition and spending. And they think they’ve got problems? Ffs, compared with us under Ashley, they’ve got comparative luxury. A move for Rafa from WHU wouldn’t surprise me.

Chancel – it’s the naughty step for you me lad….. Now!

    Spoof

A few threads back you suggest going for Nasri as a free agent. Ashley can’t even be arsed to comply with minimum wage legislation for many SD staff and you expect him to pay Nasri?

    Nice idea but …

It’s a load of Bollocks. If this had of been a top high flying RICH club then all hell would have broken loose with the linesman’s decision but oh no F##k all cos it’s Newcastle. Double standards, North / South divide as usual. If it benefits London area then that’s fine Bollocks to the rest of us.

Chancel – no need to apologise, you posted in good faith and it was an interesting little clip, whether it concerned our match or not.The thing I found most interesting about that clip was the conversation the Lino and the Ref had – the Lino said “if the defender touched the ball, it’s not offside and therefore a penalty”. The ref replied “I have no idea if the defender touched the ball” and then proceeded to award the penalty anyway, even with incomplete knowledge. Mind at that point, he was going to be criticised whichever way he jumped.

It will probably be another difficult summer for us. I can’t see Ashley getting what he wants in terms of price. The club isn’t worth more than what he’s put into it since he’s had millions in free advertising on top. The squad is extremely weak as everyone can see after 26 matches. The offer if there is another one will probably be 300M or less. He’s asking Rafa to cope on a shoestring. It won’t continue. Rafa will leave once the penalty clause in his contract has expired and then we will continue our slide down from wherever we end up this season. What new manager could Ashley possibly get who would be better than Rafa? I don’t understand the Ashley strategy if one actually exists.

A brilliant listen, cut through all of Mr tubbs c*ap. Urging everyone to give it a listen. A personal favourite Lee Charnley is being spread very thinly, fortunately there’s a lot of him to spread around. WTF is the clown doing building up a fund in case of relegation so the club can fund itself. Why not spend the money now and ensure survival. Unbelievable. Just depressing where he has taken us as a club.

This level of stupidity is rarely seen in business but football seems to have a special status where idiots are allowed to own clubs and run them into the ground (for examples please refer to Blackburn, Bolton, Sunderland, etc. etc. etc.).

It’s imperative that we stay up because if we go down this season, Rafa will be off along with half the squad and we won’t be coming back at the first time of asking this time.

If Ashley stays in charge though it will only be a matter of time before we take the dreaded drop again.

if we stay up which i think we will i don’t think Ashley will sell and i don’t think Rafa will leave. Rafa will get a bonus and pay rise and some transfer money will be available and even if it is not as much as he and fans would like Rafa will probably think he can strengthen enough to improve on this season and continue his project.

Ashley spent 3 weeks away in america during january, charnley spent a week dealing with the Beardsley investigation but hasn’t the authority or power to delegate. Ashley has cut staff to the bear minimum for the club to run. Penfold has a mortgage so cant go against ashleys way of thinking so has to try and maneuver him into his way of thinking. you couldn’t make it up.

The most worrisome thing is our home form. That could really throw a monkey wrench into our plans to stay up. We haven’t won at home since October. Time to turn that around. We have 3 crucial home matches left that should be winnable.

That might be right firebug mate but having him there isn’t helping. He supposedly is the front man where transfer deals are concerned. I’m sure he has no credibility with other clubs by now. Of course it’s difficult to have credibility when you have no money to speak of.

If we stay up I think a lot would have to happen to keep Rafa like. He looks so frustrated at times, and know we could have been safe now if Ashley had kept his promise to invest.

Ahh but Charnley is MD, but only to fill in the name gap on the staff form. Most reporters recon he has no say whatsoever, and we never hear about how he pulled off this deal or that.

His position is a simple blocker between Rafa and the money he needs, Oh and he makes the tea!

That list of Frank Pingles is interesting especially the bit about our commercial revenue going down and in an equivalent period the monies the likes of Spurs earn is going up massively.

Is it possible revenue from kit sales has gone down with Ashley staying? Also there is very little likelihood that commercial advertising revenue will go up as much of the advertising space still goes to Sports Defunct. The only real growing revenue stream is the TV money. We’re just the host of a massive parasite. He will continue to bleed the club as much as possible while trying to make the claim that it’s worth more than has been offered. A thing is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Everyone sees through you Ashley.

They don’t know how to run a club, but they do know how to keep as much money for Ashley as they can that way they get a better bonus, they couldn’t care less what happens to the club. Even if we go down Ashley will still make money from merchandise and free advertising etc.

    Away for a week
    and nothing changes
    the whingers keep on whining.
Fortunately , unlike the majority of posters on here ,
Rafa is a roll your sleeves up kind of guy who just gets on with the job at hand.
Of all the strikers that were being bandied about,
    Slimani is a class above.
Plus Rafa now has his continental style GK
The sooner Gayle is banished to the reserves the better.
Zaha gave a great display of how important a switched on striker is.
If Wilfried had been playing for us yesterday we would have scored a hatful
