The Mail is reporting today (Rob Draper and Craig Hope) that Premier League clubs will learn what the new TV rights package is – and that will begin a year come June.
The bidding has gone to a second round which could be indicative that the new deal is more than the current £5.1B deal which ends in 17 months time.
The Mail are predicting that then another bid will be made by Amanda Staveley and her PCP Partners for Newcastle United, but it will be dependent on Rafa staying at the club and Newcastle staying as a Premier League club.
At the moment we seem to be fighting for our lives in the Premier League with no immediate relief in sight – unless we can beat the Red Devils this afternoon.
They are also reporting that if Mike Ashley is still the owner come the summer, then Rafa Benitez will leave Newcastle just one year short of when his three-year contract ends at the club.
Mike Ashley and Amanda Staveley
But it’s hard to blame Rafa if he does leave after he has been messed around by Ashley in the last three transfer windows.
That started a year last January when the owner spent nothing in that transfer window.
Ashley then allowed just £19M net to be spent last summer and he brought in three players on loan last month – it was the cheap way to do things – as usual.
That’s not exactly supporting world-class manager Rafa Benitez, and he seems to have become sick of his treatment by the owner.
But we have also seen Amanda Staveley promise everything but fail to get a deal with Mike Ashley, and we believe – as do most fans – there will be no agreement to sell Newcastle this year.
Remember when Rafa was appointed almost two years ago and we were all saying even Mike Ashley cannot mess this one up?
Mike Ashley has just wrecked the Newcastle club over the last 11 years.
It’s almost criminal what he has done, including what he’s managed to achieve (against all odds) over the last 13 months that has got us into this latest crisis of relegation.
We are sick of it.
