Rafa Benitez Reflects On Great Team Performance And Excellent Result

Newcastle gave one of their best performances of the season yesterday to get our best result of the season (so far) – a 1-0 win at home against Manchester United.

That’s only our second win this year and out first win since we beat Crystal Palace 1-0 back on 21st October.

So it really was a good game for Newcastle and our fans are lapping it up – an excellent performance and just a brilliant result for Newcastle.

Rafa Benitez and Jose Mourinho have been known for their past battles and this was another one although both men are now more friendly towards each other – or so it appears.

Jose and Rafa – shake hands before the game

This is what Rafa said when asked what Jose had said to him after the game:

“He said ‘congratulations and you did well’, more or less what he said before that,”

“The team was working so hard. They had chances, and he could have been thinking that they would score, but the way that we were working, we were doing really well.”

“I’m not thinking about that (beating Mourinho).” “I was just trying to get three points against anyone, and it just happened to be Manchester United.”

“Hopefully, it will be the same against Bournemouth on February 24.”

“Against a top side, you have to play in this way. It’s good to see Mourinho praising our players, but that’s the only way for us and I’m really proud of them.”

“That is the way to be sure that you can stay in the Premier League. “Normally, I’m really pleased with the fans, anyway.”

“We win, we draw, we lose, but today it was even better, for sure.”

It was one of those games at Sty. James’ Park that fans will long remember.

And maybe it’s a taste for what’s in store for us if the Newcastle owner (Ashley, Staveley – whoever) will back Mr. Benitez in this summer’s transfer window.

Hope so.

Let’s hope Jose doesn’t make an offer for any of them – he must be thinking Lascelles would make a difference to their defence!

As you said, a quiet couple of weeks for Ashley and Amanda to have some private conversations – I wonder if Ashley’ll invite Amanda for a cosy chat over dinner, an Indian meal perhaps?

There is a massive incentive to get 3pts at Bournemouth, that would leave us only 7 pts from safety, we could in fact be home and hosed well before the end of March and wondering what all the fuss was about.
