It was a surprise last summer when Rafa made a new goalkeeper a top target for that transfer window.
That was after Karl Darlow had done well in goal after he replaced the newly arrived Matz Sels in October of 2016.
Since he arrived almost two years ago, Rafa has now brought in two goalkeepers, but Matz Sels didn’t look the part and is on loan at Anderlecht for the season.
However, Martin Dubravka does look the part – based only on his first game almost two weeks ago in the win against the Red Devils.
He was vocal and took charge of the penalty area, something Rafa likes to see in his goalkeeper and Dubravka is also very good with his feet.
Martin Dubravka – in action against Man United
Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles has praised the immediate impact Martin Dubravka has made at the club.
Jamaal has said during his training sessions the Slovakian International has been “bossing people about.”
Good for him.
This is what Jamaal has said about the new goalkeeper:
“The new keeper was brilliant against Man United and made some great saves,”
“Normally new players can be a little bit shy or they don’t come out of their shell, but in training he has come in, he wants to play and has been bossing people about.”
“That is really good because he is the voice at the back and it is important that he speaks to his defenders.”
“Fair play to him. He made some great saves and kept us a clean sheet.”
Dubravka certainly looks a better goalkeeper than we had in the squad before he arrived.
But now he has to keep up that high level of performance if his dream of joining Newcastle permanently in the summer will become real.
Dubravka and the rest of our players have a chance to get our second win in a row at Bournemouth tomorrow, something we have achieved only once this season.
