Stranger Than Strange – Half The Premier League Fighting Relegation

Sky Sports Paul Merson has predicted a 2-1 defeat for Newcastle today at Bournemouth and that seems to be par for the course for Merson, who never seems to back us for a good result.

Mark Lawrenson of the BBC has predicted a 1-1 draw for Newcastle today, and he has pointed to Newcastle to show what a weird Premier League it is this season.

There are over 10 teams – half the league – fighting relegation at the moment including Bournemouth and Newcastle.

And Paul doesn’t see that changing through the rest of the season.

And we are just 2 points above the drop zone and even a draw against the Red Devils last time out would have had us in 3rd bottom place over the two-week break.

If that happened the mood on Tyneside would have been a lot different from what it’s been – ecstatic.

Mark Lawrenson – Premier League is strange

Here’s what Mark Lawrenson has said in predicting the outcome of today’s game at Dean Court:

“There are so many teams involved in the relegation scrap that there are going to be games like this one between struggling sides every week.”

“Everyone from 10th placed Bournemouth downwards is in trouble, including Newcastle.”

“And all of the teams involved would need to get on a run where they win, say, four out of five games to reach safety.”

“I don’t see it happening.”

“The Cherries have strung together some positive results in the past but they are capable of throwing in a performance like they did in their 4-1 defeat at Huddersfield last time out.”

“Newcastle, meanwhile, beat Manchester United which was a great result for them and showed what a strange division the Premier League is.”

“The Magpies will move level on points with Bournemouth if they beat them, but a draw is a more likely outcome.”

“Prediction – Bournemouth 1 Newcastle 1.”

We’ve never know the battle to avoid relegation involve so many teams.

There are only 5 points between 3rd bottom Southampton and 10th placed Bournemouth.

Newcastle can go above the Cherries on goal difference if we win today.

That’s what we want to see as Rafa tries to put a winning streak together to take us to safety.

If we can win today it would be a second successive massive result for us.

A draw would also be a decent result, but wins are what’s going to save us quickly.
