Rafa Benitez has been interested in signing Liverpool striker Danny Ings for some time now.
Newcastle would have taken Danny on loan in January, but the Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and the player himself decided to stay at the Reds to fight for his place in the first team.
From what we can tell Rafa rates the former Burnley striker and the only doubt about him is that he’s suffered two serious knee injuries during his almost three years at Anfield.
And because of the injuries, the striker has played only 17 times for Liverpool with 3 goals and one assist, and he’s made 6 appearances so far this season.
Danny Ings – made to measure for Newcastle?
Liverpool paid Burnley £6.5M up front, with an extra £1.5M in player performance-related bonuses – and that was set by a tribunal.
Liverpool will not have paid any bonuses for the player since he has played so few games, and there are some advantages of Newcastle signing Ings this summer.
- Danny should come with a fairly low transfer fee since he is still a risk because of his knee injuries
- He is an experienced Premier League players having played a full season in the Premier League with Burnley (2014-2015) scoring 11 goals in 35 appearances.
- Danny has something to prove – to show he can still play at the top level in the Premier League.
- He easily passes the character test too, and Klopp has often praised his overall attitude in training. And outside of the game in November 2014, he launched and funded the Danny Ings Disability Sports Project.
The purpose of the project is to provide football coaching to children with disabilities and learning difficulties, and Danny was inspired to do that by a young disabled Burnley fan.
Benitez is expected to be given substantial funds in the summer, even if Mike Ashley is still the owner.
Yes – that’s not a misprint.
But Rafa will still try to pick up bargains – and Danny could be one of them.
We’d be happy enough to get a player Newcastle were after way back in 2010 when he was 18.
Maybe we’ll see Rafa talking to Ings after the game on Saturday?
