More Praise For Newcastle Striker From Rafa Benitez

We are hoping that Dwight Gayle will be fit for the match at Anfield on Saturday.

That’s after he scored a brilliant brace in the first half at Bournemouth last Saturday.

But with about 12 minutes to play in the game, when we were still 2-0 up, Dwight was taken off after complaining of tight hamstrings.

Dwight is now top of the scoring charts at the club with 5 Premier League goals – just two short of his record tally in England’s top league.

He almost doubled his tally in the first half on Saturday.

Rafa has been talking about his striker today in the Chronicle and says Dwight offers a lot to the side.

Dwight Gayle – after scoring his second goal at Bournemouth

The manager  was asked about how Dwight is doing, and he had this to say in what was a generic response:

It’s important for the strikers to score goals, but at the same time when the team doesn’t get much possession like us in the Premier League, they have to help the team defend too.”

“They have to help the team with their movements.” “Sometimes the striker’s movements create space for other players.”

“That’s what we have at the moment, players working very hard for the team and you don’t see them on the score-sheet sometimes.”

“But that doesn’t mean they aren’t doing a great job for the team.”

The Newcastle number 9 now has 28 goals for the team in 61 total appearances since signing on from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2016 for £10M.

Dwight’s goals can be key to  Newcastle staying up this season, so we are hoping he’s OK for the Liverpool game.

Gayle is a good goal-line poacher. He isn’t going to bully defenders or blast them in from 20 yards. We need to play to his strengths like last week.
