News from the training ground today as reported in the Chronicle is that Dwight Gayle is likely to play tomorrow at Anfield – because he was training well with the rest of the squad.
But there was no sign of Jonjo Shelvey, and we still don’t know how serious his knee injury is.
So it could be a good chance for 21-year-old Mikel Merino to start tomorrow at Anfield.
And with Dwight Gayle, we are hoping his hamstrings are not a serious concern.
And if he can play tomorrow and in the crucial home relegation battle against Southampton a week on Saturday, he will have three weeks rest before our next game.
Dwight Gayle – likely be fit for tomorrow
Dwight could yet be the goalscoring hero who helps to keep us in the Premier League this season.
And during Rafa’s press conference in 15 minutes time, we should also hopefully have an injury update on new loan signing Islam Slimani.
Rafa may also touch on the controversy that Algeria want Slimani in their squad for the upcoming International – when he will not have even played for Newcastle.
Comments welcome.

Comment #1it all went horribly wrong for shelvey, missing the goal that should have made it 3-0, albeit from a bad Atsu pass
and then taking out our own keeper!!!

Comment #2If slimani is fit then I’m happy for him to play for Algeria and get some match practice. I’m not sure we need him so much now with Dwight finding some form and confidence but if we do then he’ll need to hit the ground running

Comment #4I had to chuckle at a comment by Mikel in a previous thread where he said he’d love for his mom to bring him some jam.
To the UK, where we have Tiptree’s and many many more fine jam producers.
Sorry Mikel but that’s a coals to Newcastle scenario (from the recent past to younger bloggers), we have the finest jam and marmalade in the world, plus a lot of good Spanish food.
A Spanish friend of my wife used to bemoan the fact that she could never find a good Paella in Spain, her mother made one so good that Rita Hayworth and other stars used to hire her just to cook for them.
Another bit of fairly useless info but true.

Comment #6No Shelvey so hopefully a chance for Mikel to shine against Liverpool. Slim will probably make an appearance for the last game and expect to be signed by NUFC on the strength of that game. Another Sick note ??

Comment #7Not sure what the snow is like on Tyneside but I’ve never seen anything like it over here in Munster. Time to stop working and get out there!
