Jacob Murphy, Mikel Merino And Christian Atsu Start At Liverpool

Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has just announced the Newcastle team for the game at Anfield this afternoon – in the late kickoff game and Rafa has made some unexpected changes.

As expected in comes Mikel Merino for the injured Jonjo Shelvey but both Jacob Murphy and Christian Atsu have been named on the wings.

Matt Ritchie and Ayoze Perez drop to the bench for this game – so that’s 3 changes for the game today.

Jurgen Klopp and Rafa Benitez – in this fixture two years ago

This is what Rafa has said about the game at his press conference yesterday:

“I think the team were doing well against Bournemouth. And watching the game on the video, it was a pity because we had so many chances to score the third goal and finish the game.”

“But we didn’t do it. What we have to do is learn from that.”

“We were watching what we did well, what we could improve in attack and what we have to improve in defence and to be sure that we manage this type of game better when we are winning 2-0.”

“We know that when we played Liverpool here, they had possession but the pace to play on the counter-attack.”

“It is not like we can control the game by passing the ball because as soon as they regain, they are really good.”

“You saw against Porto in the Champions League, the way they were playing on the counter attack.”

“But then when they have the ball, the way they pass the ball, the pace and the ability they have, it is so difficult that you have to have this confidence coming from the game against Manchester United and the first half against Bournemouth.”

Looks a good attacking side, plenty of pace for a counter attack, let’s just hope Gayle is up to the job today.

Wow some speed in that side

    West ham getting hammered now
    They are totally dispirited
One of their players got a broken leg
which they won’t show on MotD
Complete snap flapping in the wind
Knocked the stuffing out of the Hammers

Murphy playing makes sense with Shelvey out. The side is going to need players to carry the ball forward.

Looks to be taking Liverpool on at their own fast counter-attacking game! Kenedy at no10 or a very fluid supporting 3?

Murphy’s first start since his Man City goal and good performance, hopefully in another similar stature match with few expectations he shines again.

I rarely take this position as I think it’s defeatist, but today a point would be a very good result given how things currently look on the live table.

Swansea battering West Ham. West Ham are easily the most disorganised team we’ve played this season, first match against them was one of our most dominant performances of the season and that crazy second match they were all over the place too.

Atsu No10 should give them something to think about.

I am assuming Atsu is supporting Gayle, but it could in fact be Kenedy playing that role. I would be interested to see what Kenedy could do if he is further forward and pulls the trigger on his left-peg. Kenedy seems to have some firepower.

i like atsu at number 10 and Ritchie on the bench
but if we are playing a lone striker perez is a better choice than gayle

Glad to see Murphy and Atsu starting just wish we had a big target man up front to give them someone to aim for like Mitrovich for instance !!!

Thought that was a bad one man..
The Swansea fans were applauding Reid as he was stretchered off. Firstly that’s always a bad sign of the extent of the injury. But it’s also a touch of class, fair play.

Could well be looking at a PL classic humdinger today lads, Liverpool scoring like sailors on shore leave but they’re definitely there to get into at the back, especially with our pacey counter attack setup!!

    I sense goals. . . .
    Hopefully 2-3 to us 🙂

Logic has to suggest a tonking. Cannot see Dummett controlling Salah at all. Surely has to be in the region of a minimum of 0 -3 to Liverpool.
If Rafa can get anything from this he’s IS a genius.

Results have gone pretty ok today. West ham have an awful run in I’m certain we will jump past them. The four currently at the bottom don’t look like overtaking us either.

No Mr T, as has been rightly pointed out, our lack of Serbian assassin’s up front will cost us goals at the back. He scored a tap in at derby you know. The goals are raining in all over the park. We loaned the Bentley out to next doors teenage kid. We are doomed.

Mautitoon – negative waves son. The reason why we are where we are is because we fail to put teams away .Six points dropped against Swansea & Burnley at Home & Bournemouth away . We would have then needed another win for safety. But agree number of relegation candidates are dwindling. Nowt for us tonight apart from keeping score respectable but a must win game home to Southampton next. I really believe 36/37 points if we can maintain our decent goal difference will keep us up.
Bad decision to let Mitro go (scoring for fun at Fulham who look one of best teams in Championship) & we sign a sick note who may not play a game for us. Fancy relying on Jokelu before Mitro.
But get behind the lads we have to go with what we’ve got.

Worries me that the media keep harping on about Rafa never lost when he has taken a team back to Anfield. Really tempting fate tonight. We must defend for our lives tonight!
