An Unlikely Candidate Is Our Man Of The Match At Liverpool

Paul Dummett has been in good form for the last couple of months, and he put in another solid performance yesterday at Anfield.

And the local lad easily wins our Man of the Match poll this week with 40% of the vote.

The two center-backs Lejeune (14%) and Lascelles (13%) are next in line.

So three of Newcastle’s back four yesterday were our best players.

 Paul Dummett – in training

The defense played well yesterday, but two mistakes still led to the two Liverpool goals.

And with Brighton beating an out-of-form Arsenal side 2-1 at home this afternoon, the south coast side managed by Chris Hughton have now gone into 10th place in the league and 5 points above Newcastle.

Let’s hope Crystal Palace don’t beat Manchester United at home tomorrow night.

Dummett has had some stick in this and previous seasons, some of it justified and most of it not. He was solid yesterday and deserves to be recognised for that and recent upturn in form, again a few on here won’t be happy.

Why is he an unlikely choice for MOM, he’s been consistently good since he came back from his injury and I’ve voted for him several times.

I have been a critic of Dummet, not for his defensive ability just his passing.

I thought he was excellent yesterday and I didn’t realise he was that quick.

Happy to be proven wrong and in time maybe his passing and possession work will improve.

I confess to not having been one of Dummet’s biggest fans but in fairness he is very, very consistent defensively and although not being the most reliable when playing out from defence, when he does get to the byline he can put some good crosses in. He does seem to be reliable and that’s why Rafa and many other coaches rate him highly as a defender.

Our two Centre backs are also looking like a good defensive partnership and would get into many other teams as good CB’s are hard to find. ( Ask Arsene Wenger). With the three aforementioned defenders we have the makings of a half decent defence , attacking players who can score regularly is a different story.

Bambams@7 his improvement could be down to a decent coach identifying his flaws and getting him to work on his game? Agree about his passing but i think defensively he’s on the mark atm.

just a minor point but pretty sure we beat brighton home and away last season, so this being ”out coached by Hughton” well maybe not so much eh..

if only we had the brains trust of kimbo and houdini doing team selections we’d be top of the league.

I had a fairly good idea that Conte falling out with Costa would finish him at Chelsea. Costa was far too big of a player to let go without ramifications. Whatever his problem with with Costa, he should have found a way around it. Costa was better than Drogba, and look at how much Chelsea suffered trying to replace Drogba in the first place.

Conte will get a turn taking a spin in the Real Madrid management revolving door no doubt.

I had a bit of friendly stick from one or two on here when I raised my slight concerns about Dummet’s distribution but you have probably hit the nail on the head with Rafa .Long may it continue

This City v Chelsea match is terrible, the whole Chelsea bench is worth more than our team and yet we were slated for ‘parking the bus against City. Hazard looks furious ….could the manager be trying to force a decking

Weather is nice back in Italy

Dummet has been a revelation this season, he’s caught the Diame syndrome. I don’t care what anyone says, he was one of our weakest players over the last few years. I so pleased for him and I can only put it down to good coaching.
He’s always been decent defensively, but on the ball he was a disaster. He seems a complete different player now.
I don’t think we are far from a good team. Just need to stay up, get the money and invest in a new attack.

Diame doesn’t protect his back 4 enough for my liking. He pushes too far up the pitch ball chasing then leaves gaps. I noticed Diame actually chasing the keeper (Karius) down at one point yesterday. I am starting to see now why Benitez played him as number 10 last season. A defensive midfielder has to be one of the priorities in the summer. Hopefully we don’t have to wait as long for a proper number 4 as we do for a number 10. I have forgotten how long it has been (3 years maybe) now since the side has needed a good number 10, but the clock is still ticking on that one.

Diame has a way of always looking relaxed, similar to the Ameobis—it is always worrying to see what looks like a lack of urgency.

Jeez what a shower of shyte Liverpool made our relegation candidates look like yesterday. Good effort for 40 minutes keeping them at bay, but we wouldn’t have scored in a million years. Gayle got no service what so ever.
Gerrard was right we would be bottom of the league without Rafa, although I still think we’ll be relegated. Hard working team with absolutely no cutting edge. Not enough I’m afraid. Same old same old.
We’ll done MA your consistent I’ll give you that.

So like what RH says, we beat Brighton home and away. We scored more than them and conceded less. We won more games than them and won the Championship. Yet Munster in his constant crusade to belittle the manager he supposedly loves, reckons he was was outcoached by the Brighton manager.

I think MA isnt stupid enough not to sell this summer.
The squad needs atleast 4 prem players to stay up,that going to cost upwards of 200m
Added to the fact if he dont spend on the team Rafa will walk, losing him an asset thats saleable leaving the club worth less than before.
Imho he will sell after he trousers the tv money.

Rotund thanks for not biting on a point of view I brought up for debate. I am pretty certain that our players were worth noticeably more than Brightons last year. We had the most expensive balanced squad that league has seen. So Hughton did very well with his resources. This year, they have bought well, but I would think they are not a better bunch of players than us….Surely 5 players of ours was make a composite team. Yet they are 10th. So yes, hoots is doing well and probably proportionally better than rafa. That’s not to slag off rafa by the way. But this season will come down to us beating teams like Southampton at home and he needs to pull an attacking performance out of the team .

Toonkk the sad thing is that a half decent loanee striker did probably have meantb5 more points for us. But the signing of Joselu had been a disaster and not giving mitro more chances an error imo

Who else could we have signed for 5M pounds. He put his faith in Mitro against West Ham and the oaf elbowed someone in the head. His attitude drunk in the Championship and by all accounts he doesn’t fit Rafa’s style. Are you suggesting that the manager shamed in his style that won him thirteen major honours to accommodate a guy he simply can’t trust.

Well done to Houghton and Brighton, home record has ensured safety for them. Refreshing to see them press high up and force arsenal to make mistakes. Also a 34 year old in Murray has shown what we lack, a target man who can be focal point to an attack.

Rafa has a preference in having a certain style of contain and hit on counter, dumped his only international striker who’s flourishing in a team which works for him and his strengths. Houghton on the other hand built a side to compliment his main striker!!

Have to say I was feeling really upbeat when we beat Man u and we had a good chance of pulling away from the dreaded relegation zone, we are so unpredictable no that’s wrong predictable we struggle with consistency, we work hard I can’t fault the lads for that but our squad just lack enough quality for the premier league and with the skimping on a prolific striker will cost us dearly. Other results are our only hope.
I applaud Rafa for sticking with us through MA regime and for working so hard with the players we have. One thing I have to mention Rafa has made a few mistakes not playing Mitrovic and often not plan b.

    Correct Munster
Instead of wasting 5 million on Joselu that money should have been used to fund a quality loan striker to keep us up.

I can’t understand how Houghton can get a tune out of Glenn Murray and builds a team around his strikers strengths. Yet our world class manager, elite manager couldn’t tweak his system to suit the players he had here.

Rafa will do well to keep us up but of Brighton and udders stay up then there respective managers have done a much better job, especially udders with what they have!!

Rafa has been let down by MA big time.
But let’s face it he’s a very good manager in charge of a championship squad with no striker’s.
Rafa is a very defensive manager, organised Teams that wins by nicking a goal.
I’m afraid that’s his style, like or loathe it.
    Not always pretty to watch.

Gutted we didn’t go for Traore over Murphy he is ripping the championship to shreds destroyed poor Anita yesterday too actually bringing assists and goals to his game. Even when not on top form teams leave 2 on him just in case, when he breaks no one gets near him anyway very funny to watch.

Next season we will probably playing against him in the championship, we draw too many games just not enough quality in this team to see us through.
