We have witnessed two relegations since we started the blog back in April 2004; that was before Twitter was created and Facebook had been out for two months.
The iPhone was three years away from its introduction.
But we don’t think relegations are good for any club even though people will say it will help to clear out players and has some good effects.
Improving the finances is not one of them.
We don’t believe it and Newcastle have been lucky to come straight back up and limit the damage last year and in 2010 – due to the work of two great managers – Chris Hughton and Rafa Benitez.
Coming straight back up has not been the case for other clubs like Sunderland as an example who may be a Division One club next year.
Shaka Hislop – ESPN analyst
But our former goalkeeper Shaka Hislop who is now an ESPN analyst over here in the US wants Newcastle relegated this season more than he does his other club – West Ham United.
Here’s whatShaka has said:
“I have picked Newcastle and I’ll tell you why.” “Because I think that would force Mike Ashley to sell and I think you will not see the best of Newcastle again until Mike Ashley sells.”
“In case you haven’t gathered, I’m not much of a Mike Ashley fan. I love Rafa Benitez, I really do.”
The very last thing we need is another relegation because although Ashley may sell – but we doubt that because he would lose a lot of money – Rafa will almost certainly leave the club.
Not sure that is solid logic coming from Shaka – who admits he is a big fan of Rafa.
What do you think?
