Newcastle fans took to Twitter after the 3-0 win against Southampton that took us 3 points closer to safety and we have won our last two home games and kept a clean sheet both times.
We now need to beat Huddersfield Town at home in three weeks and we’ll be very close to being safe in the Premier League.
Our fans were naturally delighted as we seemed to cruise through this game and there were good performances all over the pitch this afternoon.
Matt Ritchie – after scoring Newcastle’s third goal
Here are some sample tweets from some very happy Newcastle fans after the game.
CANNOT be understated how vital those three points were today. We barely got out of 2nd gear and still won that handsomely. Couple more of the same and we’ll be home and dry. HOWAY #NUFC

Comment #42Jib @ 16 Sorry but that was my take on it and hearing Pellegrino’s comments he seemed to think pretty much the same even going so far as to say he felt sorry for the Southampton fans having to watch that.
After 60 years of watching the Toon I know exactly what I see and am entitled to my opinion without you being so snotty about it. Perhaps, however, I should bow to your superior knowledge. Unlike you, however, I can accept it is just your opinion and what would the world be like if we all had the same one?

Comment #48#35 Essex. I have four players that I feel are up and coming and ready for a little more play time, sometimes we don’t need to go a purchase players when we have some talent in the wings, like Rashford at Man U.
Mo Sangare one for our Midfield, Sean Longstaff Midfield, Josef Yarney Defender and I would have to go with Tyrique Bartlett Striker. Ok one more for good measure, Juan Jesus Núñez Cumbrera ( Juanito for short another striker ).

I think we can solve the puzzle of whether the earth is flat or round. All we have to do is ask Kenedy when he eventually comes down to earth. I recon his legs must have turned to jelly when he lifted the roof off SJP with his first goal.

Comment #58I can almost agree with Charlie’s summary 100%. Disagreements? Lascelles’ heading is so important but because its routine for him, I think it goes a little unnoticed. Bit harsh to say Shelvey does the hollywood ball a bit much; some won’t come off but I love his positivity and ambition. I didn’t think it was a stroll. Southamton recovered well from the first goal and began to dominate the game. If it wasn’t for motm Diame getting in some great challenges, interrupting their play, and turning over the ball, it might have been a different story, although they seemed to lack a cutting edge.

Comment #59I reckon two of the three relegation places are taken already, if today was much to go by. Opinions differ but to me the game was over after two minutes. For a team fighting for survival they give me greater hope than I already had. 🙂 That truly was a desperate performance but this time we capitalised on it – most comfortable win of the season imo.
Their first shot in target was ‘celebrated’ by their fans on 65 minutes.
From today I’m writing them off unless they sack the manager this weekend. Two down, one to go. Not us!! Not a chance. The difference between effort and commitment was massive today. Every player giving it 100% for Rafa. Whereas… Wow! Not good. Zero fight vs Maximum Commitment – only one winner there.
Great team performance front to back. Assured at the back with a cutting edge up front – with Jon Jo pulling the strings. Great day out.

I was wandering around a charity shop this week with the missus and on the book shelf was an Enid Blyton novel titled. “The Famous Five On Brexit Island” I laughed out so loud that the women next to me must have thought I was the local nutter as she couldn’t move away quickly enough. 🙂

Comment #62I have to agree with wynsleap Southampton were a very poor team. Yes they have a lot of possession and play pretty passes but they have no cutting edge and their defence is awful. I thought West Ham were the worst team I’d seen at SJP this season but Southampton trumped them. However you can only beat what is in front of you and we played very well – the second goal on the break is probably one of the best goals we have scored this season!

Comment #63I’m glad to see the circus is far greater at other clubs that are seemingly imploding rather than us for once. If West ham aren’t docked points for today then the FA aren’t and PL authorities aren’t fit for purpose. Scared kids sitting in the Burnley bench to get away from the crazy antics of so called fans.
For us we now having breathing space, Diame was motm for me, he covered alot of ground and was key in winning battles. Followed by Dummett and then kenedy. Massive 3 points and our fate is in our hands. Well done to Mitro as well, nice to see one of our players having a really successful loan spell

Agreed they were awful but we can only beat what’s in front of us. Southampton should never have sacked Puel and it shows you can’t keep selling key players and expect to be fine.
I hope West Ham go down though, if you’ve not seen the scenes from today it’s a utter disgrace that people behave in such a way in this day and age. They should try having an owner like Ashley, at least they’ve spent big money!!

Comment #66Our Toon, more likely a hefty fine for the East enders. They may not need a points deduction the way things are going. With 5 of the remaining 8 at home in that unbelievably toxic atmosphere they’ve created, they’re in big trouble. Thats not considering the 3 away games to Chelsea, Arsenal and Leicester.
Fans could of shot themselves right in the feet.

It’s about making a point that fans can’t behave in a manner that threatens the safety of fellow fans including young kids, players and officials. I agree it’ll be toxic for them at home but they should get a hefty fine and a points deduction. That is not what football is about, stamp that kind of behaviour out now before others think it’s fair to follow suit

Comment #69Delighted for Shelvey – his two assists were so different, his first reminded me of Le Tissier, knocking a beautiful, accurate ball over the top for a player with the skill to make something of it. His second for me was the better, reminded me of Beardsley. Ritchie was screaming for the ball, but Shelvey could see a player standing in the way of a shot, so he delayed the pass, drew that player in which opened up the space for Ritchie to take the shot. What a shot it was too, by the way – not too much power, just passed it into the corner.
Also delighted for Kenedy. He hasn’t showed much goal threat since hitting the post vs Burnley, so to grab two goals today is fantastic for the lad. When he scored his first, the noise in the stadium must have affected him – there’s not many places go off it like that. Lovely goal, his second was made by the unselfishness of Gayle but I doubt he cared. Lets hope he gets a taste for scoring in front of 50k Geordies.

Comment #70I called this one as a draw and have never been more pleased to be wrong. The early goal essentially tore up whatever plans Pellegrino had paid before kick-off and settled the home fans right down. Had we not scored early, it could have been a completely different game as the fans grew restless and the players’ nerves started to tell. As it is, 32 points with 8 games to go is a good position to be in, given we’ve been earning point per game – continue that and we’re safe. It’s annoying to have 3 weeks off, but to be honest it’s probably not a bad thing to defer the Spurs match till we may have all but assured our PL safety. Team bonding in Spain has to be preferable to a likely defeat. If we’re able to play with a bit more freedom when the match is rescheduled, I think I’ll look forward to it more.

Comment #72Bigjim, a long three weeks? Probably, but we’ll find something to chat about. Match of the day was a bit weird – I think they didn’t show Kenedy’s second goal in the analysis and didn’t mention Diame by name at all, despite his immense performance.

Comment #75Munster, I don’t know who chooses which clips to show on the analysis, but you’d think the pundits would have some input. For Jenas to not mention Diame, given his recent anti-NUFC comments, smacks of jealousy. Diame is swiftly gaining the respect that he failed to achieve during his time here. His ability to turn defence into attack reminds me of Vieira, but I wouldn’t have said that ten matches ago
