Jonjo Shelvey Starts Against Southampton

Rafa Benitez had just named his side for the vital home game this afternoon against Southampton.

And for the first time in a long time we got the team right and indeed Jonjo Shelvey is back in the team for Mikel Merino.

It looks like Rafa will play 4-4-2 with Perez and Gayle both up front as we try to get some goals to improve our goal difference.

Matt Ritchie returns to side too.

We really need a win today.

Rafa Benitez – Newcastle manager

This is what Rafa has said about the Southampton game:

“Every game is important for us. This one against Southampton is the most important because it’s the next one. Every game is a final now.”

“Against a team that’s close to us, we must be sure that we try our best to get three points. We will realize where we are in April or May, there are a lot of games to play.”

“When you play against a top side, the difference is massive. Everything has to be perfect. Against other teams, you can make mistakes and still win.”

“My message is always clear – fans being fantastic for the team. For the players, just be sure that we give the fans something to support. If you take your chances, everything is different.”

“We (Rafa and former assistant Mauricio Pellegrino) have a good relationship. He knows me really well, I know him really well. It will be difficult to do something that the other one is not expecting.”

7 in 10 Newcastle fans think we will win the game this afternoon.

Southampton fans don’t seem happy with the line up. That is always a good sign.

Something’s gone awry there when Forster Gabbiadini and Long are subs, injuries notwithstanding they look a bit shook around. Good.

Sorry for my tardiness, had a mate turn up with a load of beers as a prezzy, his missus and mine could talk for England so they did. He wanted to be away as he had stuff to do so has just managed to prise her away.

    Anway 47 minutes to KO.

    Todays team

Newcastle United (4-4-1-1): Martin Dúbravka; DeAndre Yedlin, Jamaal Lascelles, Florian Lejeune, Paul Dummett; Matt Ritchie, Jonjo Shelvey, Mo Diamé, Kenedy; Ayoze Pérez; Dwight Gayle.

Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Javier Manquillo, Ciaran Clark, Mikel Merino, Jacob Murphy, Christian Atsu, Joselu.

And I got it spot on, 1st time this season I think! 🙂

I’m hoping Jonjo is fully fit and they’re not risking it, we need him for the run in.

Got a good vibes about today, can see a first for Kenedy and had a feeling Joselu would get one, seeing that he’s warming the bench Ayozes gonna stick one in at the Gallowgate.

Enjoy the game. Howay the lads!!

3 – 1 to the Toon. Sothampton has been playing some awful football so I think we can get three points here.
No complaints about the line up – but we need to go for it.

Kenedy has been woeful recently and in nit convinced by him. Would have preferred Murphy over him.

I’m thinking Shelvey is playing because of a 3 week break, I’d expect him to be pulled at 60 mins if we’re 2 up (or more).

Dunno why but I’ve just put a tenner on Kenedy as first scorer. Wish me well on that one eh?

They look set up to counter us on the break and with Redmond they’ll always be a threat. Tadic is inconsistent but on his day he’s a handful. I quite like their midfielder lemina.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Kenedy starts on the right and Ritchie on the left. There is normally some kind of curveball in the works.

Not seen much of them this season but they must not have been playing well to be in the position they are in especially with that team. On paper they have a much stronger side so let’s hope they are not at the races. A number of their subs would walk into our starting 11
