19-year-old winger Victor Fernandez is with the Newcastle squad in Murcia this week and is likely to be given a runout in the game tomorrow against Royal Antwerp at the Pinatar Arena.
Fernandez and 19-year-old goalkeeper Nathan Harker are with the squad in Spain getting valuable experience training with our first team players.
Fernandez was signed with some fanfare from UE Cornella Youth just over a year ago, and he has been impressive in training this week.
He was born in Barcelona of Argentine parents and has shown his talent playing for the U23 side over the last year or so.
Fernandez – in action while training in Spain
Rafa had checked with our U23 coach Ben Dawson before taking both Fernandez and Harker to Spain.
Rafa was asked about Fernandez, and this is what he said as reported in the Chronicle:
“We have some young players coming with us during the season.”
“Here, we needed to bring a couple of them. We were talking with Ben. Fernandez can play in three for four positions, so he was a good option.”
“He’s doing well, he’s training well. “The young players are shy at the beginning, but little by little, they are giving us what we are expecting from them.”
Harker was born in Northampton but signed for Newcastle as part of the Youth Academy in 2010.
He has been a regular for the U23 side since Freddie Woodman went on loan to Aberdeen last January and Nathan has looked impressive.
This is a good chance for both teenagers to impress the boss Rafa Benitez this week.
Both players will be given a run-out tomorrow.
