News today in the Mirror that if Fulham are not successful in being promoted back to the Premier League this season they will let their star midfielder Tom Cairney leave the club for £20M.
Cairney had two great games against us in the middle of the park last season in the Championship, and Rafa is an admirer of the 27-year-old who has been capped once for Scotland.
But £20M is a lot to pay for a central midfielder who has not been tested at the highest levels and has played only 14 games in the Premier League for Hull back in the 2010-2011 season.
Tom Cairney – former Newcastle midfield target
That was also the fee manager Slavisa Jokanovic put on his head fourteen months ago when Newcastle were interested in signing the player.
Newcastle did not pursue the deal at that time for that fee, but in the summer we will be flush with the Premier League funds – at least £110M.
Fulham faltered a little yesterday in their promotion drive by only drawing 2-2 at home to QPR after being 2-0 up just before halftime.
They are now 7 points behind second-placed Cardiff City, and their best chance of being promoted is probably to win the playoffs.
Tom Cairney is a good player, but £20M would seem to be a high fee for him and a risk for Newcastle.
