Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez will want to get some transfer targets tied up early in the summer after his experiences of the last three transfer windows.
Fourteen months ago no money was spent at all on new players and last summer the transfer money was seriously curtailed.
We had just been relegated and then promoted but the other two clubs coming up with us – Brighton and Huddersfield – spent more money than we did and they didn’t have any Premier League parachute payments.
But Rafa should get some significant money to spend this summer, and he will spend it wisely.
Tom Cairney of Fulham – good player – but is he worth £20M?
There was news recently that Tom Cairney would be available for £20M if Fulham do not get promoted.
It’s assumed Rafa will be keen to sign the player, but £20M is a lot of money to pay for a player untested at the highest levels.
Our readers don’t think he’s worth the fee.
The Watford Observer are also reporting that Watford are interested in signing Cairney, so they join Newcastle and West Ham as possible suitors.
But if we cannot get the transfer fee down, it’s unlikely Rafa will be interested in Cairney at that fee.
We are hoping Rafa will be able to get some bargain buys in this summer; maybe some free agents and young players like Mikel Merino who have great potential and don’t cost too much.
Rafa will be trying to strengthen every single position at the club so at the very least next season we are not fighting relegation.
He will want significant competition for every first-team place next season.
