Newcastle Now Linked With Surprising Transfer Target

Newcastle will be linked with some players we have no interest in this summer.

So nothing new there.

But nevertheless, there’s a strange link in the Star today who are reporting that Newcastle are one of five clubs interested in signing Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet this summer.

The 30-year-old former Sunderland and Belgian International goalkeeper is said to be interesting Stoke City, Southampton, Burnley, and Scottish Premiership club Celtic – as well as the Magpies.

Simon Mignolet – Newcastle interested?

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is interested in his former Liverpool goalkeeper but will have a difficult job convincing the Belgian to move to play in the Scottish Premiership.

Rafa bought goalkeeper Matz Sels the summer before last and was also after another goalkeeper last summer.

Rafa finally signed 29-year-old Sparta Prague goalkeeper Martin Dubravka on loan in January.

So far Martin has looked the part and an excellent goalkeeper for Newcastle.

While Rafa may be interested in bringing another goalkeeper to Newcastle in this summer, we doubt he would be interested in Mignolet who must be on high wages at the Reds.

Rafa will likely bring another goalkeeper in if Rob Elliot or Karl Darlow push for a move – or if Rafa sells one of them.

But while Mignolet is a good goalkeeper he’s doesn’t look as good as Dubravka, and the Belgian is prone to making mistakes.

It’s almost a certainty that Rafa will take up the option to buy Dubravka for €4M this summer and sell Matz Sels who has been on loan at Anderlecht all season.

Mignolet played 101 times for Sunderland and has played 195 times for Liverpool, so he has vast Premier League experience

What do you think?

Rob/Nicky, I agree. I think once funds are available Ashley will give rafa enough of those funds to add a few decent first teamers. Ashley just won’t let the club go into debt and he won’t be flashing the cash but I think there is a middle ground that will be found

I think Dubravka, Darlow, Elliot, Sels, and Woodman is enough for now unless we can sell two of them.
Dubravka seems like the best allrounder but he showed he’s got an error in him against Southampton. Darlow will keep improving and is probably the best shot stopper. Sels is still young for a goalkeeper so maybe those mistakes were just down to inexperience or nerves. Woodman needs one full season in Championship or abroad. Elliot is dependable but not spectacular.

Beyond that rafa has to be smart and I’m not 100% convinced that he can’t do a lot better than some of the players he has brought here. Right now I’m happy that we didn’t spend 20 mill of the kitty on Jorgensen as rafa wud have done. Maybe that’s the going rate, but most analysts feel he is very overpriced so maybe Ashley was prudent. Let’s hope for a solid kitty and smart signings like merino and dupravka. Not lazaar and sels. Also it’s not squad players we need. It’s maybe 3 very decent first teamers.

Mike there may be a reason why dupravka isn’t worth 10-15 but so far so good

I think Benitez identified Jorgensen but wouldn’t necessarily have said he was worth £20m. It doesn’t sound like he was bothered not to get him so it’s likely he thought he was worth between £12-15m. £10-12m seems fair to me but then I haven’t scouted him extensively.

He’s not worth that because he hasn’t proven himself at a top league so he is a gamble. Mignolet’s (relative) value has been dropping a long time. I’m surprised he’s worth 10-15m. Who’s to say he won’t be like the majority of other players who leave the big time and that he won’t just disintegrate.

I would never (unless they were a Geordie) buy an older player who is being discarded by the big teams. They just don’t want to be here. We are a huge demotion to them. It would be like being a managing director one day then being told you are now the receptionist. They just won’t be anywhere near as motivated and who can blame them.

There are a few exceptions. Johnny Evans. Scott Parker. And I think that’s about it. Seems the fringe players have more to prove.

Mike, certainly we haven’t done very well with older premium signings over the years. Michael Owen, Patrick Kluivert, Ian Rush, Jon Barnes, Duncan Ferguson for eg. But there have been one or two successes, namely Stuart Pearce and erm…..

Speaking of older players, I see Ibrahimovic is being released. No chance Ashley would sanction it, but put that out of your mind – hypothetically, would you like Ibra at St James for one single season (ie next season)

I’m in the ‘yes’ camp and am surprised to find myself there.

I wouldn’t put money on either of them coming to us.

We already have better than Mignolet, and from what I’ve seen of Jorgenson in the Eredivisie highlights show he hasn’t impressed, although he scored a good goal last time out. He should be getting more for the team he’s in, in the league he’s in.

Can’t help feeling that Ibraham is starting to run into injury problems, probably do OK in less physical league but I reckon he could easily be another sick note.

Thought I’d re-post this re Slimani.

I’d be inclined to have him in the match squad, give him a pain killing injection and if the need arose, either we are winning comfortably or there if a radical change required, stick him on for the last 20 minutes.

If it’s only a “slight” injury then it shouldn’t create any real harm.

Is this a re-run of Gayles hammy problems?

I agree Bill. Think he’s just got 8 goals this year which is pathetic for Feyenoord. Joselu would probably do better.

@RobLeenio. Did Stuart Pearce ever play for a “big” club? I’m sure he was mostly playing for smaller teams so coming to us (we were top 2) was a promotion not a demotion. I could see Mignolet signing for 4 years, big wages, and sitting on the bench for a few years, especially if Dubravka is as good as he seems.

Mike, fair point, consider my mention of him withdrawn, although Forest were a decent team at the time. I’d previously discounted Brian Kilcline for the same reason ie hadn’t played for a ‘big’ club, though Notts County and Coventry fans would no doubt disagree

Unless Slimani’s as keen to play as Shelvey and Lascelles who played with injections then fine, let him. If he’s not, he could be injected with as much of whatever as you want and he still wouldn’t be keen to play. Could Slimani become another Marcellino?

    And

    Robinolee

I think you’re being just a tad optimistic about Ashley’s involvement kn the club. Charnley may have indicated that they want to talk to Rafa about extending his contract but, would Ashley enter discussions on good faith or would he offer terms which he knew would be unacceptable?

As far as Ashley’s relationship with Rafa’s concerned, it appears to be minimal to say the least. I don’t have a problem with anyone reporting through the normal channels but when Charnley’s neither use nor ornament, what’s the point when he probably has to go through Barnes before and if any Rafa messages even get to Ashley for him to ignore – ala Shearer.

Mignolet is not a step forward in goal. He has always been a good shot stopper – and that convinced Liverpool to buy him from the scum for what – ~15M or more? But he has all the problems in regards to commanding the area that we have with Darlow and Elliott. He is just a more expensive version of a flappy keeper that doesn’t help his defense play better.

There were rumours and talk on deadline day that we were talking about selling merino for 15m euros which Rafa had to put a stop on. Not sure if they were true but wouldn’t be surprising.

See also in Spain match yesterday, Borja mayoral scored a hat trick. Said in Dec/Jan that we should have took a gamble on him. All round good young striker, can finish. Not getting games at Madrid and Ronald doesn’t seem to like him, reports were he told zidane not to play him.
