One of the things that is great for Newcastle United at the moment – as everybody knows is that we have a manager at the club who is known around the football world.
Rafa Benitez should help us attract good players to the club – assuming he’s given some significant money to spend by Mike Ashley.
Rafa plus our fantastic fans are huge pluses for the club and St. James’ Park is filled to its 52,000 capacity every home game – even when we were in the second division.
Those are the two things that will attract a buyer to the club but when – we don’t know.
To show how much Rafa is respected in the football world here’s a little story.
When he was Napoli manager and called Senegal International center-back Kalidou Koulibaly in 2014, the Senegalese defender thought it was a prank and kept hanging up.
Kalidou Koulibaly – 6ft 5ins Napoli center-back
Former Napoli and Argentine world-class player Maradona also paid the player a compliment (kind of) saying he “would be playing for Barcelona or Real Madrid if he was white.”
France’s manager Didier Deschamps also said he was looking to include the defender in the French side – but it was after Koulibaly had already played for Senegal.
The 22 times capped Senegal International spoke to the Orange Blog while on International duty in Senegal:
“I hung up on Benitez two or three times, as I thought it was a friend of mine pulling a prank.”
“I didn’t believe he would call me, but it was true. I was so embarrassed and kept apologizing.”
“That transfer was exactly what I needed. For a defender, there is no better place than Italy to develop tactically.”
“I have made enormous progress in that area.”
“Maradona sent me a picture three days later of him with the shirt! I was thrilled. It proves everything is possible in life.”
“I know it caused Deschamps some problems and people made fun, so I felt quite bad for him.”
“I was at home and some friends said they were talking about me on the TV. I again didn’t believe them and thought it was a joke.”
“When I saw it, honestly, I mostly felt embarrassed for Deschamps.”
“At least it proves that my hard work is getting me noticed.”
Wonder if Rafa fancies bringing the 6ft 5ins defender to Newcastle this summer?
But he will be too expensive for us.
What do you think?
