Can Newcastle Make It Two Wins In A Row Against Huddersfield?

A win on Saturday at St. James’ Park against Huddersfield Town would be only the second time this season we have managed to win two league games in a row.

It would also be three successive home wins after we once had the worst home record in the Premier League.

It’s another massive game against a relegation rival – much like our last game against Southampton at home that we ended up winning fairly easily by a 3-0 scoreline.

Managers David Wagner and Rafa Benitez shaking hands last season

Huddersfield beat us 2-1 the last time they were at St. James’ Park in August of 2016; that was our second Championship league game after we had lost the first one 1-0 at Fulham.

The Terriers also beat us 1-0 at John Smith’s Stadium last August so it will not be an easy game.

But it’s the most important league game we will have played this season.

A win is what we need.

JIB – not ignored, but most definitely behind Torres in the pecking order while Rafa was there, and much to many a Chelsea fan’s frustration as Torres was so very poor.

Off topic, but a wonderful rumour heard from a Fulham fan no less, that we are proposing a deal to swap Mitro for Sessegnon. I would totally take that deal, but I think it only exists in somebody’s head. File this one under ‘unlikely at best’.

Torres was pants in the League and while he had a good return in the EL, he flattered to deceive . That said, Rafa did win the trophy for Chelsea bit that season but it also shows that Rafa can make an opinion about a player and be stubborn to change it.

It’s clear that was the point you were
trying to make in a slightly backdoor
    way.
Show me a coach that doesn’t have
a modicum of stubbornness and elements
    of favouritism.
Rafa has those qualities in smaller quantities than
    most.
I always think when a “fan” obsesses about a
player (Mitrovic in this case) in preference to a
proven coach it shows a certain lack of real
sporting knowledge on that fan’s part.

    Toonces,
My point earlier wasn’t about Demba the player but the fact that a top manager wouldn’t have pandered to a player at the detriment to the team. It worked wonders with Ba on the wing and Cisse in the middle but Demba Ba spat his Dummy and threatened to leave because he wasn’t getting the goals. Pardew should have sussed he was going to leave anyway and stuck him on the bench until he got over himself.

Fair enough – will agree that Rafa seems better than most about this overall in terms of stubborn views on players but he has had moments in his past where it became obvious. And I do like Rafa – no issue there about saying he should go but he can make some frustrating choices.

I think the difference between Ba and Mitro was that Ba was scoring goals and proven, where as Mitro is young and still needs to prove he can do this at a top level consistently – but he should get time to do this. Doesn’t excuse Ba’s handling of the issue with Cisse, and also showed that some managers can’t handle a top player having a fit. Different times and Rafa has changed this culture at our club thankfully.

Our manager is not perfect, he is still one of the best managers in the world. Not a dig at you here but when people are continually slating him they need to step back and realise how lucky we are to have a manager of his calibre at the club.

What I would be looking interested to hear is what fans think about replacing mitro with slimani style wise? I often read that mitro can’t play in Rafas system but I’d like to know why they think slimani will considering their styles of play and strengths are very similar. Obviously slimani has experience and you could say is more composed in front of goal (which can be argued comes with experience).

Mitros problem for us was he usually didnt hit the target, how many chances did he miss?
Added to that he usually looked like he was going to get sent off, again.
He couldnt hold the ball up,didnt score and wasnt the quickest.
Mitro had a good crowd song and showed some promis but other that that nit much.

Lol, really? Fair enough he did miss a fair few chances. You can’t really expect him to be clinical at a young age can you. I’ve been someone who spoke about how he is not natural finisher and it is something that can’t be taught. However, he can still improve his finishing which if you look at is improving in terms of goal to starts. That can’t really be denied.

Before the wst ham match where he got done retrospectively, when was the last time he got sent off? The season we got relegated so wouldn’t say he was always looking like he was going to get sent off.

Couldn’t hold the ball up yet how many assists does he have for us? Generally speaking, more midfielder players tend to score when he is on the pitch for us suggesting he can hold the ball up.

How the fcuk does a country with a holigain problem and a racism problem get to host a world cup anyway ? Just proves yet again how corrupt that Fifa mob really are.

I suppose if you ignore the holigain problem, the racism problem and the countrys president being a right royal lunatic who has anyone that opposes him killed. They really do deserve to host it.

    ronaldo,
I’m afraid you and a few others are going to have to get over Mitro for awhile. He was crucially missing for the first four games of last season which no doubt cost us that first game before Murphy came in. He was nothing short of a disgrace when he came on against Villa and as Bobbybee pointed out earlier and which I have pointed out several times before, none of us know what happens behind the scenes.
Take Shelvey’s sending off against Spurs, he came out and apologised to everyone and was full of remorse. Mitrovich gave an interview saying he’d done nothing wrong, we simply do not know what was said between them when Rafa pulled him up on it, how do you know that he hadn’t been told not to give interviews before releasing the kick boxer or criminal interview. How many people jumped on the managers back for taking Gayle off against Bournemouth, he had tight hamstrings ffs. So before people start accusing the manager of holding grudges or not being tactically astute to play to Mitro’s strengths they should maybe try and find out the facts first.

Sat here listening to talksport radio. Have you heard that advert about catching a stroke quickly? F. A. S. T. I know I shouldn’t, but as soon as it says F… Face… I just imagine Catherine Tate saying ‘Bothered’. Not intentionally, it just happened and now it won’t stop. 🙂

If you look at my posts about him recently and not just today, I’m over him leaving. Just the way things are and moves don’t always work out one way or another. I still like to defend players who I feel are getting unfair stick.

Don’t mean to be picky lol but he missed the first 3 matches because of the last day of season sending off. What happened in the villa game? Which match, home or away?

You’re right nobody knows what happens behind the scenes but when things occur like fall outs, they have a way of leaking. This hasn’t happened here. And it’s not something new not being given starts. From when Rafa took over until this January window, it’s been just less than 2 seasons. Mitro had been given just 15 league starts in that period which was not in a run so you can’t exactly say he’d given him a fair shake. In that time he still scored 9 goals despite limited starts.

I never had a problem with gayle being taken off and I think the most posters were more upset that he was replaced with a midfielder so essentially trying to shut up shop when we were on top. Hindsight is wonderful I guess, I don’t tend to criticise much as there will be games where Rafa makes a wrong sub but also others where he makes the right subs. It’s football, it happens.

Shelvey is a little different, he had previous last season, started this season as captain on the day and intentionally put his studs in alli, he had no choice to apologise.

I posted at #20 because some people do say that mitro can’t work in a Rafa set up, I don’t actually believe this personally but I was asking to see why some may think that slimani might despite being similarly in style.

They’re talking about the squad for the World Cup on Talksport. Anybody watching the Italy game must’ve reached the conclusion that Stones simply gets picked because he (occasionally) plays for City.
Within the first few minutes he could’ve conceded a penalty and been red carded because he thinks he can dribble it out of defence. Not happy, he nearly did the same a few moments later. Would I swap Stones fit Lascelles in our team? Not a chance.
Then there’s the midfield. If Wilshire was fit, fair enough, but he isn’t and previous experience tells us taking half fit players simply doesn’t work. Henderson is a joke imo. Great passing stats, but that’s because he, never tries anything adventurous. Crab football – sideways all the time, except when it’s backwards.
England have great pace going forward. It’s tailor-made for Shelvey, who’s first thought is always forward. Totally attack minded. Why have all that pace if you won’t utilise it? So frustrating.

Lallana is another. Started THREE GAMES for Liverpool this season. What happened to Southgate’s claim that he would only pick players on form and playing regularly for their clubs? What a pathetic, weak minded Lilly livered chinless wonder he is.
We won’t win the World Cup anyway. What would be wrong with going to Russia and going flat out attack, with Shelvey pinging the ball about for quality, quick players to get on the end of? Give the fans something to get excited about for as long as we’re in it? Instead it’ll be same old same old. Boring football and out by the quarter finals at best.
