Newcastle Fans Take To Twitter – We’re Nearly Safe – Praise For Rafa

Newcastle fans are a happy bunch tonight after the lads carved out a vital 1-0 against Huddersfield Town for our second win in a row and the third successive home win without even conceding a goal.

We knew this was a really crucial game and to win two of them in the last two games shows our players are up for the fight.

We have 35 points and are 7 points above the drop zone – but we have to get to at least 40 points.

Rafa Benitez – another great job this season

We know that because that’s what Rafa says.

🙂

Newcastle fans took to Twitter after a great win – one we deserved – and there’s praise for what a great job Rafa has done this season.

This is a good point from Alan about Ayoze …

Slimani was a massive step from our existing strikers. Gayle missed a number of good chances but Slimani wow what an upgrade .

I agree with the tweet from Alan about Perez. Some people just can’t see what he does well, only his mistakes. In the gents after the game this guy was mouthing off about how Perez scoring was the only thing he did in the game. I pointed out that he works so hard harrying the opposition defence and sometimes (but not always) is a good outlet but was interrupted and told that he was total rubbish. I didn’t even get to mention the brilliant cross that Gayle should have headed in! Interesting that Rafa’s post-match comment said that Perez was doing a good job up to the goal so maybe I’m not talking total rubbish.

Looks like we’ve got the ninth best goal difference in the League which says something but what exactly I’m not quite sure.

What was great to see today was Dubrovka shouting the odds from the back and keeping the back four on their toes which keeps the tempo up and also makes attackers hesitate slightly when they hear a commanding voice .

Come on Amanda you know it makes sense.

Irrespective of whether Perez had a bad game or not – or even if he has several bad games – there isn’t a better option at the moment.

Perez usually makes a lot of space in the opposition defence, his runs always makes defenders lose thier shape. For some reason it just wasn’t happening for him today. Glad he got the goal though, as usually he gets loads of abuse he doesn’t deserve.

disagree somewhat regarding Perez that he was just there for the tap in. He started the attack!
He lost the ball a few times, when he was targeted and surrounded by three four players. He did alright, ultimately got us the three points, congratulations to the lad.
All the team did well in a tough game: 64% possession, 18 shots. We wore them down.
Tough to choose MOM, probably a toss up between the two MFs who absolutely prohibited them from getting going.

Wtf was the England manager doing at West Ham today? If he picks anyone out of those 2 teams we are in trouble. He needs to draft Jonjo in sharpish. Lallana picked up an injury today so there’s an opportunity!

I didn’t find out the result till quarter past five, a long wait. Excellent result and although not nearly mathematically safe, today pretty much assured PL status. Stole and Soton would have to win three of their last seven while we would have to pretty much lose all of ours. There’s definitely no reason why we can’t pick up points at Leicester, Watford and Everton who are effectively on their holidays. In fact the only defeat I can see is Spurs away as we haven’t won at Wemberley since 1955 😮

Great win great 3 points put us in an excellent position to escape the dreaded drop.
The game we dictated first half could have been three up but for poor finishing mainly from Gayle – got in some great crosses but know one thereto capitalise.
Maybe could have had a penalty first half – second half we got away with a handball decision
Usual second half – lost our way huffed and puffed with very little movement yet scored the decisive goal. From then on totally lost the plot give the ball away time and time again dodgy goalmouth scrambles – just got over the line.
Thought team lacked movement and cohesion today compared with the last few weeks
Huddersfield were poor and with very aggressive with numerous fouls going unpunished by a SHIT referee.
My man of the match was Ritchie closely followed by LeJuene and Shelvey

    My merit marks
Dubravka – 7 – nothing to do all afternoon not get an easier 90 minutes
Yedlin – 5 – poor most of the game looked if he was in a different time zone
Lascelles – 7 – another good game at the heart of defence – got a booking which he did not deserve.
Lejuene – 7.5 – had a excellent game – becoming a great central bak partnership with Lascelles – cool on the ball and can pick a great pass – class
Dummett -7- usually steady game at the back got in some great second half tackles
Shelvey – 7.5 – ran midfield today with his long and short passing sometimes overdid the long ball tho
Diame – 7 – Did ok today not as good as last few weeks played to deep for me today
Perez -7 – Scored the goal did a lot of running about got in some great positions but kept running into cul-de-sacs and lost the ball and got knocked off the ball all to easyall to often
Gayle – 7 – could of and maybe should have had a hat trick first half – ran out of steam second half and as Perez easily got muscled of the ball to easy
Ritchie – 8 – My man of the match ran his socks off got in some great crosses got back and tackled – all round excellent performance – like lot more thought strange substitution but most likely RAFA was protecting him
Kenedy – 7 – Not at his best but boy does he get stuck in and very hard to knock of the ball – like Perez ran into trouble too many times.

    Subs
Slimani – Looks canny what I liked about him was always on the move playing on the shoulder of the last man turning and running but we could not pick him out – hopefully, we can utilize his movement

Ref – Atkinson how the hell does he get to ref a Premiership game

more chances than Jonjo Shelvey – 4. In fact, only David Silva (5) created more in today’s Premier League games.

Good review, as always and good pick re Ritchie.
Must disagree on yedlin, thought he was excellent, in attack and defense.
Kenedy probably not deserving a 7. Maybe Gayle too, though I’d grade them all higher, given the effort and result.

Being that the England team look a lot more like a team than they have for a while, except for the lack of a midfielder to pick out that killer pass to the frontline, surely our Jonjo is the obvious candidate to play that role.

Mr. Southgate should come and watch him play when he’s not at home ironing his heed.

I know it would be good for both lascelles and shelvey to go to the World Cup but speaking selfishly. If this is a summer where the club could be sold and Rafa could be backed, it would be better for us if they had a full summer break and pre season.

Not saying this will happen, just in a positive mood right now lol and thinking of possibilities.

Thought Lascelles had his poorest game for a long time he is still far better than most in the England squad though, and Lejuene needs to stop thinking he’s a winger trying skills under pressure got caught a couple of times luckily we have Dummett sliding, blocking and just always throwing himself at anything.

Also thought Kennedy was awful until the assist he didn’t do much and lost it numerous times but what an assist fair play. As with any flair player i’m not expecting him to be awesome every game.

Such a shame we won’t have Slimani next game think he will chip in with a few before season end though.

Diame MOTM for me he is fcuking awesome in the holding role breaks up so much, what a huge turn around he’s had could well get player of the season for us.

    Last comment for the night:
I’ve been a Shelvey critic, against the wave: too many Hollywood passes when there was an easy one, holding onto the ball too long and losing it in front of the defense; erratic late red card deserving tackles, etc.

BUT: last few games he’s been brilliant. Doesn’t commit above errors, plays to his super strong points, fully committed. Probably Diame’s surprising and meteoric rise has helped. He cleans up so much, properly, freeing Shelvey to do what he does best.

Congratulations to both of them. I’m a Merino fan, but they’ve deservedly kept him out!

You shouldn’t be surprised that ‘Some people just can’t see what he [Perez] does well, only his mistakes. As far as I can remember, there’s always been a player who attracted scorn – despite the protestations of their manager.

Tommy Gibb, Frank Clark and John Tudor come to mind and more recently, Dummet, Diame and now it’s Perez’s turn to suffer the wrath of some fans.

It beats me why some folk seem to need someone to pick on – especially these days when Rafa, a manager of world repute, sings their praises, and one whose opinion must surely carry more weight than the critics’.

I would add to that about shelvey. He’s had criticism aimed at him labelling him lazy. I’ve never said he was lazy but his approach to the defensive side of the cm position had been lazy in my eyes. It is something he is clearly working on for the last few games and both him and our team are benefitting from it. Long may it continue. If he keeps it up he can become a big player in the league. Won’t be long until he wins over detractors when it comes to playing for England. It may Ben too soon for this World Cup. In a way I’d like him to go, in another way, I’d like him to stay and have a break to go again next season.

Slimani’s extra height as compared to Gayle contributed to Perez’ goal as Lossl would have had an easier job to deal with Atsu’s cross if up against a shorter CF.
If he keeps fit he’ll surely be a starter before the end of the season.

Shelvey was a joy to watch tonight. Always looking to pass it forward and create something. He might not run himself into the ground but the Pirlo types rarely do. They use their brain instead to dictate the tempo and split the opposition open. England has nobody that goes beyond the simple 2 yard sideways pass. We could sacrifice one of our many Gareth Barry types and have plenty left over if we are in need of some extra sideways passing. Shelvey has to go to the World Cup otherwise we’ll have 10 Gareth Barrys on the pitch.

    Just back from the game
    Superb
We could have had 5 in the first half as others have said
But what impressed me was the patience this very young side showed against a horrible team that should be ashamed of themselves
In a relegation battle and they turn up to a six pointer with no intention of even trying to play football, simply kick the opponent, fain injury ,waste time at every opportunity,a disgrace .
Wagner not even fit to lace rafas boots all hot air
Rafa has done so well with a very limited squad getting the centre backs playing football has given shelvey so much space
He was very very good today a pleasure to watch
And seeing a proper centre forward on the pitch at the end gave so much hope ,it was interesting how hard shelvey hit the ball him and it stuck like glue
The futures bright ,let’s hope so
But then again this is nufc
    Still a great day
