These Were Newcastle’s Two Outstanding Players Against Huddersfield

The Newcastle performance in that first half against the Terriers on Saturday was one of the best performances we have seen from them this season.

The team looked a very good one.

The score was still 0-0 at the half but we missed three or four good chances which is why we need to pay some big bucks for one or two strikers this summer.

But with Islam Slimani finally making his long-awaited debut he will have a chance to score some goals for us – and we hope he does.

Our central midfield on Saturday was dominant with both Mo Diame and Jonjo Shelvey having excellent games.

Moe Diame listening to Rafa Benitez on the touchline

Mo is our Man of the Match with 37% of the vote and Jonjo is next in line at 28%.

These two players have been working so well this year and are keeping players like Merino and Hayden out of the side.

Mo Diame has been a revelation – he’s looking a top player at the moment.

He has one more year left on his contract come June and it will be interesting to see if Rafa extends that deal – say for a couple of years.

Kenedy was third in the voting and this lad is class the way he set up the goal for Perez with 10 minutes to play; he made it look so easy but it wasn’t.

There were good performances all over the field for Newcastle in our 1-0 win but our weakness is still putting the ball in the back of the net.

Fix that problem and we should be much better.

Welcome to Newcastle – Islam Slimani.

The team is purring like a well oiled motor now.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see us have a really strong
end to the season as players push for contract renewals
    and extensions.

    Jib,

    Re your posting about Lascelles.

I think Chelsea haven’t recovered from the loss of Terry. Lascelles would be a perfect replacement principally because of his leadership qualities.

If sold it would be a significant loss to the club, that I am sure would have a negative impact on the next season.

It would be a test for the club to resist Chelsea. I’m sure Rafa would resist any overtures from Chelsea. Similarly any new owner.

Mo Diame has been a revelation.

I attribute this to playing in a position he feels very comfortable with alongside players that complements his style and to which a close understanding has developed. Without Shelvey and Lascelles (and Lejeune in the Huddersfield game) it would be different.
