The Feel-Good Factor – How We Compare To Two Years Ago

When Rafa arrived at the club two years ago when we were in relegation trouble fans were hoping Rafa could get two quick wins to make life easier for us.

But it didn’t happen and our 31st game two years ago was Rafa’s third in charge when we lost 3-2 at Norwich; the Canaries scored the dramatic winner through Olsson in stoppage time.

When Rafa arrived we lost 1-0 at Leicester City, then drew 1-1 at home to Sunderland (that ended six defeats in a row by Sunderland) and then the loss at Norwich.

The next game would see a terrible first half at the Saints when we ended up losing 3-1 at St, Mary’s Stadium, but then we put together three wins and three draws in those final; six games but it wasn’t enough.

Rafa Benitez – at Norwich two years ago

We have put together two successive wins in our last two games and have 10 points from the last five games so yes – things are looking up.

Here how the stats compare – we are 10 points better of than we were two years ago with a goal difference which is 18 goals better than back then.

If we can replicate what we did two years ago and get 12 points from the last seven games we’ll finish up with a very decent 47 points.

47 points would be amazing. That would put us in the top half of the table I think.

47 points will be a struggle, but we’re riding a wave of optimism currently. Why not?

    hibbit,
A point will do nicely, I’m going in to the game quietly confident. I don’t want to sound cocky and have it bite me on the ar$e but nothing short of a complete implosion will see us go down.

I would be amazed if we don’t get 40+ points, and I have been eyeing 10th spot for quite a while – since our form turnaround. Our recent form is definitely top-half material.

    Regarding the smb

If the shoe was on the other foot there would be that many planes over SJP people would think the battle of Britain had resumed.

I’ve SMB mates from work and sometimes you can get a football conversation but most of the time they’re looking for us to fail to get the boot in.

Their club is getting what it deserves for being run so poorly, their fans will get some friendly abuse which they deserve but it will be no where near what we would receive from them.

I’ve heard at work today there’s a lot of Mags planning to go to a SMB away match to cheer them down.

OP, there’s been rumours of NUFC fans going to the Stadium of Light for the Wolves match on the 6th May, their final home match, as we play at Watford on the 5th. Another ‘Gillingham’ where our fans infiltrated the stadium and cheered them down to the 3rd tier in 1987.

Not sure it would go down too well in the press, mind…

OP, agreed there – it was bad enough when our young ‘uns played at the SoS and our fans tore out a few seats. Not the side of the club I’d like to promote, though I do think that incident was overblown.

We can’t bank on it, but “flip flop” fitting fever is due to start taking it’s toll on a number of comfortably mid-table clubs. Conveniently for us we play several of the teams during our run in: Leicester, Watford, Everton and possibly even Arsenal, will have little to play for when we meet them over next few weeks. Many will have already booked their summer travel plans, and their sun tan lotion at the ready! I can see us getting more points off these foes than we might normally expect and 10th place is very possible! 🙂

It’s a shame Slimani can’t play this weekend as Gayle missed a hatfull of good chances this weekend and I’d at least like to see what Slim can do.

We’ll sit deep to avoid Vardys pace so a ball over the top will be on the cards, if Gayle has his shooting boots on I can see us getting a draw at least.

Talking of that infamous Gillingham game at Roker Park, who went along? I asked once before and got chatting to a guy who was the cousin of Gavin Peacock – Gavin’s Dad was the Gills manager at the time and he took him to the game.

There has to be at least a couple of others on here that went to that match.

I can’t see us putting our flip flops on.

Rafa won’t allow it nor will Lascalles and I don’t see the team doing it, they’ve worked so hard for each other all season i think they’d see it as giving up.

Interesting snippet in the DT about how supporters under the age of 55 are more prone to heart attacks when their team wins according to some medical research.

Perhaps this is why MA is so parsimonious, he’s thinking of you younger guys.

While in a optimistic mode, I confess to my top 3 wishes for the next few months:

    1. PCP and Amanda come back with a larger offer backed by a significant source of funds for improving the team and Ashley contrary to his nature accepts said offer without any shenanigans.
    2. Rafa is given a new contract and with a commitment from the new owners to their joint “project”: getting NUFC into top 4.
    3. That the class of additions to the squad are of a caliber that could carry us to fulfillment of that project.

It’s spring and hope is in the air!

It is comforting to know that Ashley’s austerity’s been maintained in the interest of our fans’ health. What a kind, caring man he is.

    However (and reposted)

If Ashley genuinely wants to sell up, then surely even he must realise that selling the likes of Lascelles will devalue the club and this its eventual sale price?

And, if he insists that we can’t buy players because of ongoing takeover negotiations, then by the same token, we can’t sell without the agreement of the potential buyer of the club, can he?

A moot point, but as PCP had said that its last offer remained on the table, does that imply that PCP’s still regarded as the potential buyer? Or, are we back at square one where the due diligence process is made available to any party which expresses an interest – thus dragging the process over the summer during which Ashley’ll again block any spend?

The man is a bloody nightmare who doesn’t give a chit about the club other than it being a saleable asset.

Ah, but then again, he does care about fans’ health so he’s not really that bad.

Jib, it’s an important distinction, isn’t it? He’s not ready yet, he’ll want to go to Spain for the rest of his career when he is ready, in the meantime he can carry on learning from Rafa, then take himself to a top Prem club or French Ligue 1 club in the Champions League, then arrive back in Spain to a fanfare. He’s not daft this one, he has his career mapped out.

I’m not sure if it’ll be Pcp quite possibly someone else. Any genuine parties will now be looking at us seriously as safety looks likely.

Was there other parties who did the due diligence? If there was they may show their hand.

I just want Ashley gone and someone who’ll have some sort of ambition and try to maximise the club’s potential.
