There was speculation over the last week that we may lose Spanish U21 central midfielder Mikel Merino in the summer.
And there were even some reports that Mikel Merino had asked to leave Newcastle, but we didn’t believe them.
In his interviews, the 21-year-old likable lad has always come over as loving things at Newcastle.
He also knows he is under the guidance of one of the best ever Spanish coaches in Rafa Benitez.
Mikel Merino – in action for Spain U21 side last month
Asked if Merino had informed him that he wanted to leave Newcastle, this is what Rafa said
“No. He is training well.”
“I don’t need to talk too much about his future. “He has to train well, be available and I know the agents.”
“We were talking in the past about how he is doing. “It’s fine. It’s just a question about where he is from – the Basque country.”
“It’s always an attention for Real Sociedad and Bilbao because they do not have too many players, especially players of his level.”
“So you cannot stop that. “
Mikel wasn’t on the bench last week for the Huddersfield game, but we do expect him to be a substitute at Leicester City today.
Mikel has made 23 appearances (15 starts), one goal and one assist for us since he joined Newcastle from Borussia Dortmund last August – initially on loan.
It was reported that he had signed permanently a couple of months later..

Comment #1I think last season was a great opportunity to start giving Armstrong games with us, especially on the back of a successful season at Coventry. He didn’t have to start every game but could be easily be built. We were a dominant team so he would have got chances. Remember when we were in the championship last time and Carroll developed a striker the season went on going from strength to strength. Not saying would have happened like that but he could have been sent on loan again after the season.
