Rafa should get enough transfer funds this summer – at least compared with the previous transfer windows – because Newcastle will be getting a windfall from the Premier League of around £125M if we finish in 10th place.
Last season West Brom were in 10th place, and they received just short of £120M for their efforts.
The payments are split between 3 different components – position in the league table, TV money based on the number of times the club is on live TV and a base amount that every club gets just for being in the Premier League.
Mike Ashley – should be able to give Rafa Benitez some big money to spend
It could even be more than that because with Rafa Benitez on the touchline we seem to be a popular choice to have our games televised live and for each live game, we get an extra fee.of just short of £1M.
And there’s a possibility we can still overtake Leicester City and Everton and finish in 8th position.
We beat Leicester last time out, and now we are at Goodison Park next Monday night, so we have a chance to overtake the Toffees with another win.
Rafa can also sell players we have who are no longer needed like Aleksandar Mitrovic, Chancel Mbemba, Jack Colback and perhaps Dwight Gayle for a decent fee and use that money to bring in more players this summer.
So even with Mike Ashley still the owner there should be money to spend this summer, and it should be the biggest windfall Rafa has had at Newcastle.
Now we need people like Lee Charnley to act quickly and get in the players Rafa wants.

Comment #162There has always been money available and this summer will be no different albeit there will be more with the TV and final place money but this does not mean Ashley will make it available for transfers. Think about it, given his past behaviour he will see no need to improve a top 10 squad. He will want to reduce the wage bill and that will mean sales of surplus players.
The only bargaining chip Rafa has is to delay discussions around signing a new deal until after the transfer window has closed. This means Ashley and the ‘board’ will have to back him or he can simply walk away.
The ‘board’ is one man.. Lee Charnley but I doubt he has any authority to make decisions on spending money, I think he would have to have any deals rubber stamped by Ashley and possibly Justin Barnes who appears to have been brought in to get the club ready for sale.

Comment #163There is one aspect of Ashley’s business acumen that I’ve never quite understood; he has obviously made an obscene amount of dosh due to a very simple marketing strategy.
He buys insolvent sport goods companies, therefore he owns the brand name and the graphic identity of the brand logo, Slasenger, Dunlop, Lonsdale, Puma etc, etc. He then attaches the brand name and graphics to barging basement tat, and people fall for it. Money for old rope.
He is, however, a one trick pony, “you can fool some of the people some of the time…”
‘Brand Value’ can be worth a considerable amount of money to a business. It allows a business to add a premium to the retail price of the goods or services it offers. For instance, if Rolls Royce offer a polo shirt to their customers, with the ‘Rolls Royce’ badge on the front, they will be able to charge considerably more than a company like ‘Wonga’, for example.
The may be a possibility that Ashley will not sell NUFC, he may allow Rafa to spend a ‘reasonable’ amount of money, however those insidious ‘Sports Direct’ signs will scar our wonderful stadium.
The top sports clubs in the world attract the top sponsors, Man utd receive £75m from Chevrolet each year. Arsenal’s relationship with the Emerites is very lucrative. An unattractive sponsor has a negative value to the club.
Ashley has made his money because he was very aware of the importance of brand values, it’s just astonishing that by swamping the stadium with SD adverts he has reduced the value of the club, and defacing our iconic strips with the logos of money lenders and off-white bookmakers shows a distinct lack of class.
Barcelona, until recently, had no commercial shirt sponsor, they had ‘Unesco’ instead, now that’s class.
To successfully sell NUFC certain criteria have to be in place;
A large modern iconic stadium…..’Tick’
A young, improving team…..Tick.
A highly respected and successful Manager….. tick
A balanced set of books……Tick
A large and loyal fanbase….Tick Tick Tick
A well structured and balanced wage structure…Tick
A collection of quality, long term sponsors……?
A state of the art training facilities….?
A potential future of a stable membership of the EPL….?
A realistic longterm plan…?
There are probably more questions, however it begs the most important question that is how did a very successful businessman, with a strategy of brand value manipulation, get it so wrong?
