Newcastle went into the tough game at Goodison Park safe on 41 points after four wins in a row, and a win would have taken us 2 points above the Toffees with a game in hand.
But our win streak did not continue, and we lost 1-0 for the 5th time running against the Toffees although it was anybody’s game over those final 20 minutes.
With a little bit of luck, we could have come away with at least a draw, but we didn’t take our chances – once again.
Rafa Benitez with captain Jamaal Lascelles
Jamaal Lascelles, the Newcastle captain, said being on 41 points had nothing to do with the team’s somewhat lackluster performance.
This is what the 24-year-old said in the Chronicle today:
“No, not at all.”
“Yeah, we are safe but all the boys just want us to finish as high as we can.”
“On Monday I thought we put in the same effort and showed the same passion we have been doing in games recently.”
“It was just one of them days.” “They didn’t have many chances and the chance they had went in.”
“Sometimes you’ve just got to give credit to the opposition because they’re a good side.”
We have an excellent chance to get back to our winning ways when we play at home to bottom club West Brom on Saturday.
But that’s not a given that we can win the game, but 3 points would restore the feel-good feeling with the fans.
West Brom have beaten Manchester United and drawn with Liverpool in their last two games to their credit.
The potential win would also go a long way towards having us finish in the top ten this season, and that would be a terrific finish for the club.
Here’s where we stand at the moment with only four games to play – 12 points to play for.
