Fans Still Very Wary Of Mike Ashley – “Let’s Not Kid Ourselves”

The good news from Lee Ryder is that his information is that Mike Ashley is keen to give Rafa a new deal this summer and he’s confident he can get that done.

Ryder is also reporting that Ashley will also give Rafa some significant funds this summer from the money Newcastle will get from the Premier League next month.

If we can take say 6 points from our last four games, we should finish 9th or 10th could receive around ÂŁ125M by our estimate.

But once bitten twice shy and with Ashley looking to keep the club a significant portion of fans just don’t trust Ashley.

After all, he said he would give Rafa every last penny a year ago, and he didn’t.

But one thing is for sure we all love Rafa Benitez – just to put a positive spin on things.

This is what fans have been saying on Twitter about the news in the Chronicle – both positive and negative tweets are included.

The bus passed me by – repost from previous:

This Chronicle story is full of nothing. The only quote in there is Ashley’s from last Summer – “cannot and will not” release funds to compete with Man City.

Always thought that was missing the point, we don’t expect that kind of funding, just a realistic amount within an agreed budget to allow Rafa to upgrade his squad. If he is able to do that consistently over a few years, we will be challenging for Europe and cups and, with a fair wind behind us, will be able to beat anyone on our day.

This is all Rafa wants also – if we can guarantee him this (and he will look for guarantees) then he will stay.

Apologies for speaking for us all, but I haven’t ever heard anything contrary to that from any (sane) Newcastle fan

hibbit, do you count Lee Ryder as an Ashley ‘Crony’? Didn’t he get banned from SJP a few years ago for negative reporting of the Ashley regime?

Not contradicting you, just curious if that’s what you meant.

cronies in this instant was aimed at Sky
which now seems to be his chosen method of getting his message out there

Well, hibbit, I’m not going to deny that for sure. Less of a lap-dog, more of a stooge perhaps. I would hope that an experienced journo would be able to recognise when he’s being spun a line, but maybe he’s more interested in page hits than accuracy.

Unfortunately, if Rafa is seen to settle for less than impressive reinforcement funds and extend his contract, the fans will start to turn against him should results falter. Right now, he has the wind at his back and is gambling that Mashley wants to keep him at all costs. Trouble is, Mashley does love a flutter.

A leopard never changes its spots. Rafa will get about ÂŁ20m and told to make the best of that. (The rest of the TV money etc. will go to “pay off” Ashley’s never ending, never decreasing debt).
Exit Rafa and the place in mourning. It’s on the cards and it won’t be pleasant for the fans. It will be even less pleasant for Ashley too as I suspect that that ‘may be the last straw that broke the camel’s back’. I reckon it will get really nasty at the Toon.
