It was a good performance from the Newcastle side yesterday when West Brom ended our four four-game winning streak with a 1-0 win.
That’s 8 points they have taken in their four games in April beating Newcastle and Manchester United away and drawing with Liverpool at home.
It’s getting interesting at the bottom of the league table with the Saints also winning, so Swansea, Huddersfield, and West Ham are teams that still could be caught.
Rafa was not happy at all with the performance yesterday.
But he wants the lads to get back to their old ways and cut out the mistakes that have crept into Newcastle’s game since we took Arsenal apart at home 2-1 two weeks ago.
Matt Phillips – scored the only goal after 29 minutes yesterday
This is some of what Rafa said after the game:
“It was important to stay up – nobody was expecting that we could finish 10th or we could be even ninth or eighth.”
“So now it’s just to be sure that we finish doing well and at least giving everything.”
“And after that see where we are in the table.”
“It’s not a big issue. For me, it’s more the feeling that everything we have been doing in one way, we did wrong today.”
“We had two or three chances that could have been different, and then we would have been talking about another game.”
“But that’s football, you have to take your chances. We will see how we react.”
Rafa always likes to end a season on a high so we suspect it will be back to basics this week in training and he’s likely to make some changes to give other players a chance at Watford.
Watford are 3 points behind us, so it’s important to not lose if we want to finish in the top ten.
They beat us 3-0 at St. James’ Park last year in late November.
We are currently 3 points clear in 10th place with a better goal difference than the teams below us.
A win at Watford is what we need and then we finish with two tough matches – at Tottenham and against Chelsea at home in two weeks time.
