Lee Charnley is leading the negotiations with Rafa Benitez’ representatives to see if he is happy to stay at Newcastle and sign a new deal that hopefully will keep the manager on Tyneside for many years.
But for the last three summers, this has happened which indicates Rafa is still not sure if he will be backed by Mike Ashley.
He hasn’t been backed much at all over the last 18 months with three transfer windows in which we spent a total of a little over £20M net.
That’s while other clubs were spending money like it was going out of style.
Everton were one good example of that, and they are now currently two places above us in the league.
Rafa Benitez – does he trust Mike Ashley?
And that tells you what an excellent job the manager has done with little money being made available.
We don’t know if Rafa will sign a new deal but we think the odds are good – but it’s not because of what Mike Ashley has done.
He is probably the one person associated with Newcastle who doesn’t seem to back the manager 100%.
And he’s the owner.
There’s also not much happening as far as a takeover is concerned, and he will very likely remain the owner.
It’s been tough for Rafa Benitez over the last 18 months, and he now wants some help from the owner.
But whatever Ashley says is likely to be taken with a pinch of salt since a year ago he told Rafa he could have every last penny the club generated.
And that didn’t happen – Ashley didn’t keep his part of the agreement.
So we can understand why the manager is hesitating before committing long-term to Newcastle.
What do you think?
