There’s not too much to be gleaned from the minutes of the latest Fans Forum meeting which took place on Wednesday, April 25th.
The main thing fans are interested in is to get Rafa signed up to a long-term contract and also to give him some significant transfer funds to spend this summer – presumably as part of an overall deal.
But there was very little forthcoming from the club about these things and they didn’t really say anything that we didn’t already know.
Mike Ashley – looks like he will stay as owner for the foreseeable future
Here are some of the comments from the minutes starting with whether the club is still up for sale:
“The position has not changed”. “If or when there is anything to update, the club would do so.”
“The manager has a year remaining on his contract.” “As the manager has publicly stated, discussions to extend his contract are ongoing.”
“The club stressed that its conversations with the manager are ongoing and include discussions around the transfer pot available.”
“The club explained that the recruitment process is year-round and doesn’t stop.”
“The manager and recruitment team are talking about targets for this window and have been for some time.”
So not much new there other than the club is still up for sale – with the price probably close now to £400M.
But what seems evident is that Mike Ashley will be the owner of the club for the foreseeable future.
And no reference is made in the minutes to Ms. Amanda Staveley and her PCP Capital Partners group, who bid for Newcastle late last year.
It doesn’t appear that any group is currently interested in buying Newcastle United at the moment – although that can change very quickly.
Let’s hope Mike Ashley can get Rafa to sign a long-term deal so at least we tie down our world-class manager to stay at the helm for years to come.
That’s our immediate concern.
