Newcastle played very poorly last Saturday in losing 1-0 to West Brom at home.
And Rafa Benitez will demand a much better performance from the side tomorrow at Vicarage Road.
A win in the game would take us 6 points above Watford in the table, and they would have one game left to play, but if Watford win, it will bring them level on points with us – but we have a better goal difference.
Rafa says he will change one or two players with Clark and Atsu the only players not available through injury.
Mikel Merino – could get a start tomorrow?
This is some of what Rafa said today:
“At the beginning, finishing in the top 17 would have been good. To finish in the top 10 would be even better.”
“It makes a difference in prize money, but to me finishing 8th or 12th doesn’t make a difference. But now we are here I’d like to.”
“When you are working so hard and achieve your target, it’s more difficult. I was tempted to repeat the team, to change players.”
“We will change players to keep fresh legs.” “Clark and Atsu have problems with injuries. The rest are fine.”
“They (Watford) have some good players.” We were watching the last game against Tottenham and they had some chances on the counter.”
“They are not in the same moment as when we lost in November. We expect some surprises from them.”
Mikel Merino has been back in training this week, and he may be given a start tomorrow at Watford – Mikel has seen very little playing time this year, although he is still one for the future at Newcastle.
Tomorrow we start playing our last three games in a short 9 days.
On Wednesday night we play Tottenham at Wembley and then next Sunday we are at home to Chelsea in our final game of the season.
