Rafa Benitez’ skills in man-management were in full display after the third defeat in a row at Watford yesterday.
It was a game of two halves with Watford well on top in that first half when they went in 2-0 up at halftime and that score could have been a lot worse for us but for the heroics of Martin Dubravka in goal.
The second half was a lot better, and if we had played that way during the whole game, we could have even taken something out of the game.
But as it is, we now face two top six clubs in our last two games of the season – Tottenham and Chelsea.
Rafa Benitez – still really proud of my players
And if we are lapse with poor concentration like we have been in the last two games, we will be punished in those final two games of the season.
This is what Rafa said after the game as reported in the Chronicle:
“I was really proud of this group of players because they were doing really well.”
“Now, still I am proud of them, but I would like to see the team winning and finish the season on a high.”
“It will be a pity that all the hard work, all the good things that we have done, would just end with us losing a lot of games in a row.”
“You can see other teams are still fighting against relegation.”
“But with five games to go we were safe, so it was a fantastic achievement for this group of players.”
“But now we have to continue trying to do our best. It is not just to carry on and finish the season.”
“We have to do something better to finish with a good taste in our mouths.”
Rafa is so right there that it will be a bit of a downer if we lose our last two games.
But it also tells us how much the team lacks experience, and Rafa will know exactly what players he needs to bring in this summer.
Mike Ashley must support Rafa 100% this summer or run the risk of losing one of the best managers Newcastle have ever had.
We must have a much stronger side for next season, so we are not fighting (yet) another relegation battle.
