He’s Our Man Of The Match Against Watford

Newcastle made a really poor start to the game on Saturday at Vicarage Road and if it hadn’t been for some brilliant saves from our goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, things could have been a lot worse.

Dubravka was one of the few Newcastle players who were awake in the first half, and at 2-0 Paul Dummett gave away a penalty for a clumsy challenge.

But the Slovakian International made a wonderful double save to keep out Troy Deeney’s penalty attempt.

Our understanding is the loan fee for the 29-year-old goalkeeper is €2M and the clause in his contract is an option to buy for €4M.

Martin Dubravka – making a brilliant double save from Deeney penalty

Dubravka has been outstanding for Newcastle ever since his first game when we beat Manchester United at home 1-0 and we’re almost 100% certain he will be the first signing for Newcastle this summer.

He’s really a bargain at €4M.

And well done to Dubravka for his heroics at Watford on Saturday.

I thought Shelvey deserved it tbh. Spent the entire game trying to get something manufactured out of nothing. If we had decent personnel up front we’d have got at least four goals. Imho of course.

When making sweeping statements about Benitezs leverage it’s always good to remember that he is an employee, and Mike Ashley is his employer.

We might not like it if Ashley squeezes him out the door. But he’s done other horrible things and got away with it.

Agree. Jibs Rafa is at Ashley’s beck and Dall. He gave him sod all money in real terms and may see more Loanees this summer too. Rafa wants the big crowd adulation and a proper club. No, Ashley has the purse strings and will decide what happens, good or bad. Rafa has to either suck that up or leave. If he leaves there will be war for about 2 weeks then we will revert back to the French model.

Rafa isn’t at Ashley’s beck and call by the simple design that he doesn’t need us, we need him. He would, I’m sure, quite easily detach himself from us and find another job to tide him over until his children are grown up and he then returns to Spain.

Unfortunately, as always, it is us as fans who will lose out. Ashley will all too easily revert to a yes man manager and scrape survival each and every season. I’m sure he will see that as a fair trade off than having a manager with ambition who threatens to challenge that status quo.

I wouldn’t be surprised if privately he is regretting getting Rafa in in the first place.

He’s at his beck and call if he wants to manage nufc. If Rafa leaves Ashley will get a stooge in and start again.

Oh definitely. He won’t agree to that though so we should be prepared for an exit this summer I feel. At which point this club will crumble, and in 2 years time when we are the Championship again Ashley will have wished he’d sold up.

Ashley doesn’t have time to take a significant interest in the club or the expertise to run it right, thus we have Barnes, Bishop, Llambias, Jiminez Wise, Charnley etc, the people he knows and could get, running the club like a shop, but he must know Rafa’s way is the right way, and that he can’t afford to lose him. He’ll cut a deal and Rafa will stay. It will just take a little time is all.

It does look like a sham, the FPR, so many ways it seems to get around it, I would say our net spend maybe 30,000,000 after all transfer activities at most for next season, that for me equates to a mid table finish, WLD football can’t be anything else with those kind of dealings.

I think Rafa wud take 30mill net. Last year it was less than 20. Assuming he doesn’t lose lascelles etc. If he chooses right he might get a good (ish) striker., winger and dupravka for that.

Last year the figure was closer to 30 mill if you include the loan fees for Slimani, Dubravka and Kenedy. If they can find 30 million first season back, they can find 60 million once they get the telly money. I see little reason to think he won’t get it, and in truth it still only equates to basically three quality starters, even if we ship out a few. Anything less just won’t cut the mustard.

I wonder how many other clubs when giving a manager a budget it includes the players wages, surely the wages come out of the day to day running costs.
I am becoming increasingly worried about the Rafa staying thing, everything is telling me that he won’t sign and to be honest I wouldn’t blame him from walking out.
It’s Ashley’s remit to run the club on a shoestring am convinced that our better player will be sold.
A new manager plus the coaching staff will cost a lot of money and who would come to this club who is worthwhile.
I can see a big fallout on the horizon with Ashley winning because he owns the club.

Support for the sign when Rafa signs, really hope this takes off but can’t see it making a difference.

Will we buy Slimani and Kennedy? That’s a big chunk of money, Gayle seriously not up to it and Perez also, half a dozen goals does not cut it at all, two decent strikers in would cost twice as much as we will get for getting rid of these two, knackas Joselu needs to go back to Spain, this is for starters, will Benitez stay? Plenty of folk saying no, will Mike Sell, plenty saying he won’t, get ready for another Fred Karno summer.

You would have to expect that Slimani would be available for a knock-down fee after his recent escapades. It would just be a question of getting Slimani’s wages knocked down. He is apparently on 90k per week… I wonder how he would feel about a 50% pay cut lol.

I would like to see Slimani stay and prove himself; there is surely more to him than has been shown, but yep, it has to be at the right price for the club.

I think if Rafa and Ashley are both still here and Rafa is given about £30-50m net spend our squad will look something like this.

Not saying this is what I would like as I’d prefer more additions and improvements but this is what I think would be possible. Big addition to striker and #10. Reinforce wings, cm and lb and cover for lascelles at cb.

    GK
    Dubravka (Darlow/Sels and Elliot)

    RB
    Yedlin (Manquillo)

    LB
    Dummett (New LB)

    CB
Lascelles Lejuene (New CB and Clarke) Mbemba sold.

    CM
Diame Shelvey (Merino Hayden New CM)

    AM
    New #10 and Perez

    WINGS
Ritchie Murphy Kenedy/New Winger and possibly another if atsu is sold. Just a feeling.

    STRIKER
    New Striker Gayle Joselu

This contract/transfer window carry on will just continue until Ashley goes. Even if he does give assurances etc he will do the bare minimum as to what is stated in the contract. Rafa will always be frustrated and we will constantly involved in a media circus.
