Mike Ashley Cannot Be Allowed To Screw Up Newcastle Future – He Must Sell

When Rafa Benitez was signed by Newcastle in March 2016, some Newcastle fans said even Mike Ashley cannot screw this one up.

And after Rafa clearly showed his commitment to the club by staying with us when we went into the second division.

For the first time for a very long time, the England second division had a world-class manager in it – Mr. Benitez, the Newcastle boss.

But as is usual with Rafa he has delivered for Newcastle, and he got the Magpies promoted in first place from the Championship last May.

And without getting any financial help from owner Mike Ashley last summer, he has managed to get Newcastle to safety in the Premier League.

Mike Ashley – why doesn’t he give Rafa what he wants?

Pundits have said Rafa has kept a Championship level side in the Premier League this season and he has been nominated for Premier League Manager of the Season.

After those accomplishments, one would think that Rafa would be rewarded by owner Mike Ashley – especially after the value of the club has gone up by as much as £100M in the last six months.

But this is a stubborn (and selfish) Mike Ashley who Rafa is dealing with – an owner who couldn’t keep his word last summer.

It’s not looking good with talks on a new contract being stalled after a couple of weeks of negotiating.

And you can bet your life that other Premier League clubs are already enquiring about Rafa’s position and possible availability at Newcastle.

And if Rafa walks – which is getting much closer as negotiations for a new contract falter – it will be Ashley’s fault.

But Ashley shouldn’t be allowed to screw up Newcastle’s future after he has already been a terrible owner for the past eleven years; that’s been bad enough.

He should sell the club and get out – something he should have done years ago.

Comments welcome.

jane, what motive would Staveley have for wanting publicity? It’s not a democracy, it’s a sale she was interested in, no popularity contests were needed to be won. And how difficult would it be to be more popular than Ashley anyway? To beat Ashley for popularity, you just need to not be Mike Ashley—job done.

i can only guess she thought it would help her with this/other sales for some reason.

Yeah, not sure I will be bothering with reading Like Edwards in future. Aiming quips at Staveley and talking up Ashley isn’t my bag.

Bye, Bye Rafa. Sorry that our owner is the dumbest person on the planet. Good luck with a new team and an owner that actually talks to you and shows his approval towards everything you had done for the club, here’s the thing Rafa. As Forest Gump once said ” My mom always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” Well sorry Forest but on this occasion we all know what we are gonna get, Sweet F/A from the owner, he’s way to busy rubbing shoulder’s with hooker’s in Miami. ( Hopefully Ed lets the hooker remark stay )

We as Newcastle fans and long time tortured by fat Mike knew this day would come. Yet here we all are surprised by the clubs actions. The takeover or non takeover as I would call it was Ashley’s smokescreen last year and now the excuses have ran thin Benitez is finally clicking and realising he’s been used . Don’t be wishing for a takeover before you go to sleep tonight because Ashley has no intention of selling. His main Sports Direct profit comes from Newcastle merchandise and Asian outlets specifically targeted due to the Clubs large support in those areas backed up with his huge signs grabbing free advertising meaning he has no reason to sell unless the bids ludicrous . Staveley wants a PL club but on the cheap not 100M over realistic price. No the only hope we have in this situation is a face to face meeting with fat lad and having Benitez try to get him to see the same picture as Ashley himself once envisaged only three years ago. Remember that Sky interview where he said he wasn’t leaving till he’d won something or qualified for the CL? Well this is the perfect opportunity and in doing so may realise him 400M + in future years. Time to hold your breath and write the cheque Mike or the whole country will know exactly what all Newcastle fans know!

    Ooops new post:

Fundamentally, Ashley is not a fan. Not sure why he bought a club in the North East beyond him thinking he was getting a bargain. The Ashley era has consisted of trying to extract maximum value; player sales, land sales, merchandise arrangements, free advertising are the most egregious impositions on capital and income streams. Anyone that claims that the club should be revenue neutral would not take land or free advertising. And that is only what exists on the public record.

At the moment, Rafa is keeping me going. I love this club, but with Ashley as an owner, so much that I treasure is reduced to a commodity.

As for the fans saying it isn’t that bad – Stockholm syndrome. Just saying.

Umm right on every detail of the club’s strategy eh? To be that prophetic would be amazing, less amazing if you were actually involved with your “finger on the pulse” in some fashion? I’m struggling with your concept that Benitez is party (perhaps only in some minor involvement) to a hearts and minds campaign with the Geordie faithful. You say he’s not precisely complicit but is aware of the game being played out. Enlighten me Jane – what does complicity actually involve, again?

Ashley likes to cut bigger people than himself down to size. Allardyce Keegan Shearer and now Rafa. It’s a personality weakness of his. Another personality trait is that he’s a risk taker – a gambler. The only positive spin on this delay is that he’s possibly creating this sense of impending doom in the hope of spurring potential purchasers of the cloob (as Rafa pronounces it) into a hasty and inflated deal.

Murvar – better for a purchaser to wait until Rafa leaves, Ashley hires another stooge manager who he doesn’t finance, and the team begins next season with a string of half a dozen losses and sitting squarely at the bottom of the table.

“what does complicity actually involve, again?”

if Rafa (and Ashley) know what the outcome of the negotiations are going to be but still says things in the media as if he doesn’t.

24th May 2015 – Ashley says he’s not going until we win something

11th August 2017 – can not compete with the likes of man city etc…

I believe the 2015 thing was trumped by the 2017 thing.

Thanks Jane, extremely helpful. So your theory, or possibly inside knowledge, is that Benitez is fully aware of a campaign to sway the paying fans in a propaganda offensive, and is playing his part in helping it along. Right?

Here’s another one Ed, maybe run a story about Amanda Staveley. The heading could be, Amanda Staveley, 15 minutes of fame. It just seems maybe Ashley was right about one thing, she was full of shite. She could not show funds available to purchase the club and that’s the reason it wasn’t sold. All she wanted was some more publicity for her firm, in one article she said, if the club is safe from relegation then we will be back to make a deal, well talk is cheap Amanda and we have been safe for weeks, so where the hell are you?

Just so we are clear, I believe we all understand that being economical with the truth or “turning a blind eye” also means complicity? Yep.

@Jane – why guess? Ashley leaks everything, through his ‘unnamed sources’ as well as via Sky. The rags are all too happy to regurgitate the nonsense unchecked.

He demanded a NDA, then was first to blab about PCP. Staveley spoke only after being denigrated by Ashley and publicly stated she had made 3 offers in varying guises.

The only proven liar and publicity manipulator is Ashley and he’s shown that over 11 years.

@ Nostradamus. Unbelievable! You are another one who continues to put Ashley’s weasly words before anything or anyone else.

She made 3 offers. Confirmed that out of her own mouth, while Ashley said she made none (via unnamed sources).

Taking Ashley’s side is about as brain dead as any person could prove to be.

It could have been an “extras” problem. You know, like when you buy a car and find that it’s not so cheap after all because to get decent functionality and use out of it you have to shell out for stuff to add on.

Stavely and the crew might have rocked up with a £250-300m price tag bandied about but on getting down to the dirty details found that if they wanted merchandising, catering, club image rights, advertising …it was going to be extra, sorry. Not included in the base deal. Nope.

Would Mr Ashley’s advisors allow PCP to sign a NDA and thereby examine NUFC’s books without showing proof that they had the funds to hand?

If that is the case then anyone could rollup sign an NDA and have a good root through our finances.

Does business really work this way.

Sick and tired, calling someone brain dead just shows how as you called it, brain dead you are. If you took the time and actually looked at all the responses you would see the first one I posted with me comparing Ashley as one of the dumbest people on the planet, and if you actually read my post you would see I said maybe he was right. I never once said he was 100% right I said maybe. As for the buyout, I will stand firm on this, I will say 100% Amanda’s group will not purchase Newcastle, yes go ahead and say Ashley would not sell anyway. Money always talks in any business, if the money is there he will sell. So I hedged my bets, if she does not purchase then I’m correct in my view, if she does purchase and I’m wrong then I will be one the of happiest Newcastle fans on the planet as we have finally got rid of Ashley.
