Rafa – We Deserved More – Including Two Penalties

Newcastle went down to their fourth defeat in a row, and for the third time in those games, we failed to score a goal.

We had chances to score and maybe should have had a couple of penalties, but it doesn’t seem like we qualify to get penalties this season.

But Rafa was upbeat after the game because of a much better performance from his team.

But it’s now possible we can tumble a few places down the table on Sunday if we cannot beat or at least draw with Chelsea.

Mauricio Pochettino and Rafa Benitez last night

That would not be a fitting way to end the season at St. James’ Park.

Rafa had this to say after the game :

“Absolutely, 100% we deserved something,”

“We did really well. To have 14 attempts against Tottenham at home means something we did was right.”

“But two penalty decisions that for us were clear, but they were not given.”

“Still, we had enough chances to score, we put a very good team under pressure, but I think we deserved more.”

“There was a foul on Matt Ritchie and another on Ayoze Perez too. You could see both. “There was even another one on Ayoze from behind, but two clear penalties.”

“I’m really pleased because it’s not easy when you are safe with five games to go, for a team like us, with a squad like ours.”

“Everyone’s talking about ‘oh, they are one of the first candidates to go down’. “

“It’s not easy to carry on with five games to play.” “In the games that we couldn’t win, we were very close.”

“The last game against Watford, in the first half we didn’t play well, but, in the second half, we had a great reaction. “

“Against Tottenham, from the first minute until the last, you could see from the touchline they were doing what they had to do – and we deserve credit for that.”

“We had some good chances, and especially we created enough situations to have even more chances with the final pass in the final third.”

“But that’s the reason why the Premier League is so difficult. “They have maybe one good chance and score a goal.”

It seems Rafa wants to keep both his players and fans upbeat after a fourth successive disappointment after winning four games in a row to secure our safety.

As we said before, we now need a win on Sunday against Chelsea and we’ll finish in 10th place – an excellent way to end the season.

Mo got the BBC MOTM award
Maybe we could offload Joselu and Gayle as a pair to an aspiring Championship side as that seems to be their level. Mike’s famous “two for one” offer.
Just how many points we would have had if they knew how to stay on their feet, strike the ball and find the net is quite a few.
From a fans view scoring these missing goals means we come away from losing positions with a draw or even a win, other matches we go ahead and stay ahead to secure victories, that’s the difference and without being greedy could have meant say eighth this season.
