Two years ago negotiations were going on to have Rafa stay at the club after we had been relegated.
There was also a massive outpouring of emotion from the fans in the final game at home to second-placed Tottenham.
And even though Mitrovic was sent off with 20 minutes to play with the score at 2-1, we blew Spurs away and won the game 5-1.
It’s a somewhat similar situation now with Ashley again in negotiations with Rafa and his representatives to try to get him to stay, and the final game is against a top-six club in Chelsea.
Antonio Conte – Chelsea manager
Mike Ashley attended that game two years ago and held a meeting with the manager in the Boardroom after the game, but it’s unlikely he will be at the game tomorrow.
He seems to have lost interest in Newcastle this season and says he wants to sell the club.
Rafa was asked about the similarities to two years ago as reported in the Chronicle:
“You never know. The difference is I have a contract, that is a positive thing,”
“What I want is to see the atmosphere and scoreline replicated. It was a great day for everyone, even if we were relegated.”
“The fans appreciated what we were trying to do. For sure, it was a key part of my decision to stay.”
“But we will see where are. My job is to focus on the game, to win the game and I’m sure the fans will help the team.”
“If everything is positive and the atmosphere is good, it’s always much better.”
The big difference to two years ago is that we are safe in the Premier League and were safe four games ago.
But there’s no doubt that a win tomorrow and hopefully a 10th place finish in the league will have the feel-good factor in full force on Tyneside.
Now if only Mike Ashley doesn’t screw things up in his negotiations with Mr. Benitez …..
What do you think?
