Rafa Talks After Chelsea Win – I Still Have One Year Left At Newcastle

Rafa was upbeat at his press conference after the brilliant 3-0 win over Chelsea to finish off the season with a win.

And yes we stayed above both Crystal Palace and Bournemouth with the 3 points and we have finished in 10th place in the Premier League.

And Rafa still has to get an agreement with owner Mike Ashley to sign a new long-term deal to stay at the club.

As we said after the game today there’s just no way Rafa should be allowed to leave and why ius ti so difficult for Mike Ashley to say yes – to every one of Rafa’s requests for how he wants to run the club.

Rafa Benitez – on the touchline this afternoon

In two years he has got us into the top half of the Premier League and he showed his complete commitment to the club by staying with us when we were relegated.

This is a no-brainer but apparently not for Mike Ashley.

This is some of what Rafa said after the game:

”What I like is to be sure the team can compete to finish above 10th.”

“This group of players have done very well but we have to do something more to make sure the group is strong and more competitive.”

“We have to have confidence in our team that they can go anywhere and win.”

“I still have one year left but we have to make sure we do the right things.”

“The fans have ambitions and we have ambitions.”

Here’s where we finished the season.

Some of the berks who post on here
were trying to exhort those that were
going to the game to turn it into a protest.

Great season. Loved watching the last five games with only looking up the table and not worrying how far down we could fall. With that being said, after four loses on the trot, a bit of anxiety came in with the possibility of loosing the fifth and dropping down to 15th. So, it was again fun watching a game that had real meaning, at least to me, and the boys showed up and secured 10th; a great accomplishment. Although, if you noticed, another goal from Palace and a concession from us could have moved us to 11th. Kept the shutout, kept 10th and capped an awesome 2 years under Rafa.

Lastly, its been a long (now it can be said) very fun season, so I completely forgot my preseason predictions and who had organized it. I remember last year that poster produced a spreadsheet like post listing everyones. Was hoping he could do again.

Long live Rafa, long live Newcastle.

Someone in a white shirt and jacket sat in Ashley’s seat at the end of the match – was it our generous benefactor ? Anyone know ?

As a fan it’s been nerve jangling to say the least. What’s it like as a manager who has to steer his squad through a long winless streak? Ooof!

The players should get a lot of praise aswell especially since alot were calling them championship standard which was never fair
    Apart from up top ofcourse
Diame my player of the season followed by shelvey then ritchie
Diame to totally turn it round is exceptional and has been an absolute beast 2nd half of season infact the seasons end has come to early for him as he was getting better and better

Defence has been brilliant too dummett being the big plus who has also changed alot of peoples minds
Now ashley sell up or spend some fuskin money ya big barrel of kernts

They were undisputably a championship squad seeing as it was by and large where it was assembled. However as a development squad it has had magic worked on it and the side is without doubt prem quality as a unit. It needs the icing putting on this cake now Mr Ashley.

A rollercoaster to the end. Four defeats followed by a serious beating of last year’s champions.
Well done indeed to Rafa and the team.

By now Conte appeared in genuine peril of technical area implosion. In pointed contrast, Benítez seemed an oasis of calm, typically celebrating the goal by giving his glasses a polish before summoning Jamaal Lascelles over for a detailed tactical discussion. (Louise Taylor)

Manxpie they may have started out that way but certainly didn’t finish as that. Personally I pointed this out not to knock the lads but to try and get some perspective when they were getting stick for losing. I expected us to struggle this year but the turnaround has been nothing short of magnificent.

Hard to pick a player of the season though seeing as the whole point of this year’s success has been the team unit and cohesion Benitez has organised. Each player has been drilled and disciplined to contribute. I’d have difficulty narrowing it down to four.

Could you be trying to justify your earlier foul and misdirected post? If so, you’re a bit late.

For a while, I’ve genuinely been wondering whether you have been going out your way to play the fool when posting or whether you’re genuinely in need of medical and/ or psychiatric help.

Ron thanks for the highlights , on this season if someone had offered 10th place at start of season there hand would’ve been snapped off and kicked over SJP! Buzzing isn’t the word, come on Ashley you’re a business man, do the best deal you’ve ever done and secure Rafa for the next 5 years. Hwtl

I think Lascelles edges player of the season because he has been our most consistent performer. He’s also a huge asset to the team as seen by our results with or without him.

Runners up are clearly: Shelvey and Diame. (MoJo)

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has thanked Rafa Benítez, the players and the club’s supporters following the club’s tenth-place finish in the Premier League.

The Magpies secured a place in the top half with a 3-0 victory over Chelsea at St. James’ Park on Sunday.

The owner said: “I would like to thank Rafa Benitez for his magnificent achievement this season.

“I would also like to applaud the players, led fantastically by the captain Jamaal Lascelles.

“On many occasions throughout the season they have been described as a Championship side, which I personally consider to be derogatory.

“Rafa, as always, has my full support, and contrary to some media reports that portray me as a pantomime villain, I will continue to ensure that every penny generated by the club is available to him.

“I hope very much that Rafa will remain at Newcastle United.

“Finally, I would like to thank the fans for their unrivalled support of Rafa and the team throughout the season.”

Player of the season is a tough one for me as it’s been a team effort.

Rafa was right re the keeper. Our defense has been excellent. Best in years, all four of them. Our local lad, our speedster, the captain. What happened to our annual spanking? Gone.

MF has been solid since the turn of the year. Shelvey Diame a great pairing.

Ritchie is tops as, it seems, our twelve million signing will be.

    Perez gave us 13 points.

The CF situation needs improvement although the effort is appreciated.

    Well done, team and Rafa.

I wonder if Ashley may say.. Rafa you have £80 mill, you can spend it on one player or you can use some for academy and/or training ground or wherever you see fit, but that’s the lot.

Indeed it is hard to pick out a player of the season on what was a true team effort. But as captain of that team and based on how badly our defense struggled in his absence my “vote” goes to Jamaal Lascelles.

Honorable mention and really Jamaal’s co-MVP’s goes to MoJo: Mo Diame and Jonjo Shelvey. Dominant in second half of season.

Special consideration to: Lejeune, Dubravka, Paul Dummitt and Matt Ritchie.

Much improved and still improving awards to Ayoze, Diandre Yedlin and Kenedy.

Player’s learning and growing and hopefully still with us next season: Murphy, Merino, Hayden and Mitrovic (yes you heard me!).

Players gone, expendable or to be sold:
    Gamez (returning as coach?)
    Haidara (good luck lad!)
Saivet (looked good when he played)
Mbemba (not sure what happened with him)
Joselu ( sorry mate just not good enough!)
    Gayle (thanks Dwight. Good luck!)
Atsu (one player who went backwards this season)
    Manquillo (not good enough)
Aarons (sorry but he has not progressed last 3 years!)
    Lazaar, Good bye bye.
