Keith Downie Reports Newcastle To Make First Signing On Thursday

Keith Downie of Sky Sports is confirming that Rafa Benitez is ready to make Slovakian goalkeeper Martin Dubravka his first signing of the summer transfer window.

It was almost a no-brainer for Rafa after Dubravka has been superb for us since he arrived on loan from Sparta Prague.

Even on Sunday in the second half against Chelsea, he made two terrific second-half saves to preserve the clean sheet.

They report that Dubravka has an option to buy clause in his contract for £4m once the transfer window opens.

Martin Dubravka – bargain buy at £4M

The Premier League transfer window will open this year on Thursday, May 17 – almost a month earlier than previously – so he can become a Newcastle player in two days.

We would expect an announcement about Martin to be issued on Thursday and wonder if Rafa has other signings lined up to be announced soon?

Newcastle would have only had to agree on personal terms for the goalkeeper and he will have done himself a lot of good with his performances for us this year.

Newcastle should also get to know before the end of the week exactly how much we will be getting from the Premier League and it looks like it’s a whopping  £125M.

That’s a lot better than the £47M we got from the Championship and Premier League last May.

In fact, it’s £78M more than last year.

🙂

Quality keeper that has made a huge difference since he arrived. We suddenly looked more solid and assured at the back than ever before. I never feel uneasy when crosses are lumped to our keeper and I have all the confidence in the world that Dubravka has got it covered.

Great signing and Rafa showed all of us why he is top class as we all thought that it was pointless going for another keeper at the time.

Now after this one is sorted go all out for Kenedy or Promes.

..or both! lol Imagine having each on either side of midfield? That would be amazing. Really wish Rafa is properly backed this summer. You never know with Ashley, he did back the clueless McClaren with £80m remember. Let’s hope Rafa can get at least that plus player sales this summer, fingers crossed.

That signing’ll mean nowt in terms of Rafa’s requirements and Ashley’s full support.

    JP,
Not all of us thought that getting another keeper would be pointless.

Unless Charnley finds a way to screw it up, of course.

JFA- Okay I’ll rephrase that 98% of us must have thought getting in another keeper was pointless at the time.

    JP,
This is the huge misconception, he didn’t back McLaren with 80M, he spent 50M on saleable assets that had zero input from the head coach, he then released another 30M when we were in the clarts, It was a constant skimming over major cracks.

If I was Shelvey I’d be tempted to sue Southgate for defamation of character, disciplinary problems ha, they’re no worse than some others that will probably get into the squad.

    Ron,
He’ll be trying to renegotiate the release clause.

@Essex – Shelvey hasn’t been booked in 2018. Can other midfielders on the plane claim that? Doubt it. It all comes back to unsubstantiated racist claims against Shelvey. Joke really but hey, as a Toon fan I’m happy for him to put his feet up this summer and come back fighting fit next season. England’s loss is Newcastle’s gain.

Arsenal, Chelsea, West Ham, Swansea, Stoke and mustn’t forget Sunderland are all in meltdown and the focus of idle gossip, chit chat, speculation and ridicule.

Meanwhile Rafa calmly makes the first signing of the transfer window on day one.

On Tyneside peace and love purveys the air. A calmness exists. Even the name Ashley only briefly stirs the mood. Another hob nob Charnley ?

Haven’t felt this calm for years, think I’ll talk to the Doc about coming off my meds.

Also Mclaren didn’t get to spend 50 or 80 million! They were mostly Carr picks!!

Mclaren wanted Austin got Mitrovic instead!

Wanted another defender was made to keep Colo!

Could probably have got Richie at that time for about 2 million instead of Thauvin…….

I knew Thauvin was gonna be hit back in France, had a sneaky feeling. We should have kept him and sent him back on loan and sell only Cabella. Thauvin is just what we need right now, funny how football works sometimes but really it was our mistake to sell him and not loan him or else we would be laughing right now.

Jail that’s ridiculous. Would you refuse another 50m to Rafa this summer on saleable assets? Ashley gave money then, for whatever reasons, largely survival. I’d take 50mill for Rafa now and I think he would too.
